Afghanistan Post 188 as Atal, Omarzai Power Late Surge in T20 Asia Cup Opener Against Hong Kong

Half-centuries from Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah Omarzai lifted Afghanistan to 188 for 6 against Hong Kong in the opening match of the men’s T20 Asia Cup. Despite a spirited bowling performance from Hong Kong’s spinners, a late onslaught in the final overs swung momentum firmly in Afghanistan's favour.

Sediqullah Atal continued his fine form with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 73 off 52 balls. This marks his third T20I fifty in his last four innings, showcasing consistency in the shortest format. However, his innings was not without luck — Hong Kong captain Yasin Murtaza was involved in all three dropped chances that gave Atal extra lives, including two drops himself and another off his own bowling.

Afghanistan, who were briefly shackled by the slower bowlers on a sluggish Abu Dhabi surface, exploded in the final overs. The game turned sharply in the 17th over when pace was reintroduced. Atal and Omarzai launched an all-out assault on seamer Ayush Shukla and the rest of the pace attack, racking up 69 runs in the last four overs.

Omarzai, who came in during a tense middle phase, shifted gears late in the innings. His knock of 53 off just 21 balls — at a strike rate of 252.38 — included an array of innovative strokes, from powerful slog sweeps to deft ramps past the wicketkeeper. It was his maiden T20I fifty and came at a crucial juncture to help Afghanistan post a competitive total.

Earlier, Hong Kong’s spin trio of Yasin Murtaza, Ehsan Khan, and Kinchit Shah bowled with great control, extracting sharp turn and bounce to restrict Afghanistan to 119 for 3 in 16 overs. The spinners collectively delivered 11 overs, conceding just 75 runs and picking up three wickets. At one point, the match seemed to be tilting Hong Kong’s way — until Afghanistan’s counter-attack in the death overs turned the tide.

Afghanistan’s total of 188 now leaves Hong Kong facing a steep chase. If they manage to scale the target, it would be their highest successful chase in T20Is, a record currently standing well below the 188 mark.

With the Asia Cup underway, both sides are looking to make early statements. For Afghanistan, the match highlighted their finishing firepower. For Hong Kong, it will now be a test of nerve and batting depth.
