Rajput Optimistic as UAE Eyes T20 World Cup Qualification After Asia Cup Defeat

Despite a crushing nine-wicket defeat to India in their Asia Cup opener, UAE head coach Lalchand Rajput remains hopeful that his team will bounce back and build towards their ultimate goal — qualifying for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Facing India’s world-class spin duo Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy, UAE collapsed to 57 all out — their lowest T20I total. The two wristspinners combined for figures of 5 for 11 in just 4.1 overs, leaving the UAE batters visibly rattled.

"To be very honest, it wasn't a turning track," Rajput admitted after the match. "It was a good wicket to bat on, but the skill level these bowlers have got — especially the wristspinners — they can make the ball turn on any surface. The lengths they bowled made the difference."

India made short work of the chase, wrapping up the game in just 17.4 overs — one of their shortest T20Is ever. Despite the heavy defeat, Rajput emphasized the importance of this experience for his young side.

"For our batsmen, to be very honest, they were playing against this quality of spin for the first time," he said. "They were overawed by India's big names. We should have batted 20 overs. But this is a learning process."

Rajput refrained from harsh criticism, instead focusing on the positives and the bigger picture ahead.

"This is a big platform for them. These matches will give the players confidence. We just have to move on from here," he said. "Yes, we should’ve been more patient and aimed for 130-140, but I’m not going to be critical after just one loss."

He also pointed to UAE’s competitive showing in recent matches, including a 2-1 home series win over Bangladesh, and close contests against Pakistan and Afghanistan in a recent tri-series, even though UAE lost all four games.

"In the tri-series, we hardly got out to the spinners. Only Abrar Ahmed troubled us with a 4-for. But overall, we played spin well," Rajput added. "Spinners like Varun are rare. Even top players struggle against them."

Rajput also defended the team’s recent loss to Uganda, saying it was part of a strategic effort to test bench strength ahead of the all-important T20 World Cup qualifiers.

"The Uganda tour was for experimentation. We beat other teams there, but tried a few new faces. The bigger goal is World Cup qualification. That’s our focus now," he said.

Looking ahead, Rajput remains confident his side can recover quickly and show their true potential in the remaining matches of the Asia Cup and beyond.

"We’re a much better team than what we showed today," he concluded. "From here, we can only go up."

UAE's next Asia Cup fixture is crucial as they aim to gain momentum before the Asian qualifiers for the T20 World Cup begin.
