Sri Lanka Names Five Debutants in Chamari Athapaththu-led Squad for ICC Women’s World Cup 2025

Sri Lanka have announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, with five players set to make their debut in the marquee tournament. The squad will be led by veteran batter Chamari Athapaththu, who remains the team’s key figure as they aim to deliver a breakthrough campaign.

The World Cup debutants include Kavisha Dilhari, Malki Madara, Vishmi Gunaratne, Imesha Dulani, and Dewmi Vihanga. Their inclusion brings a mix of youthful energy to the side as Sri Lanka looks to build a competitive unit for the global stage.

From the squad that participated in the tri-series against India and South Africa earlier this year, Hansima Karunaratne, Manudi Nanayakkara, and Rashmika Sewwandi have missed out. Notably, Imesha Dulani and experienced seamer Udeshika Prabodani make their return to the team, while 38-year-old off-spinner Inoshi Fernando has been named as a reserve.

Sri Lanka’s recent form in One-Day Internationals has been inconsistent, recording just two wins from eight matches in 2025. With five defeats and one no result in that span, the team faces an uphill task to make an impact. Historically, Sri Lanka have never reached a Women’s World Cup final and will be eager to rewrite their narrative this time around.

The team will enjoy home advantage in most of their matches, playing all but two of their fixtures at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. They will open their campaign against co-hosts India in Guwahati on September 30, and play another away match against Bangladesh in Navi Mumbai on October 20.

Ahead of the tournament, Sri Lanka will play two warm-up games — against Pakistan on September 25 and Bangladesh on September 27 — both scheduled in Colombo.
