Somerset Earn Three Bowling Bonus Points in Rain-Hit Draw Against Yorkshire

Somerset claimed three valuable bowling bonus points as their County Championship Division One clash with Yorkshire ended in a rain-affected draw at the Cooper Associates County Ground in Taunton.

After four days of persistent weather interruptions, the final day again saw rain dominate proceedings. Despite this, Somerset’s bowlers made significant inroads into Yorkshire’s batting lineup, reducing the visitors to 134 for 9 declared in reply to Somerset’s commanding 441 for 6 declared.

Starting the day on 17 without loss, Yorkshire crumbled to 57 for 6 during a lively morning session. Josh Davey (3-34) and Lewis Gregory (2 wickets) were instrumental in triggering the collapse, aided by excellent catching behind the stumps.

The morning’s breakthrough came quickly, with Finlay Bean edging Gregory to wicketkeeper James Rew. Gregory struck again the very next ball, dismissing debutant Mayank Agarwal for a golden duck, caught at third slip by Tom Abell. Davey then removed James Wharton and the struggling Jonny Bairstow in quick succession, the latter caught at slip for just 2. Ben Green and Jack Leach chipped in with a wicket each before rain forced an early lunch at 12:20pm with Yorkshire teetering on 60 for 6.

Intermittent showers delayed the resumption until 3pm, with 33 overs lost across the day. Upon resumption, Yorkshire lost Dom Bess for a duck, edging Green behind to give Rew his third catch of the innings. At 60 for 7, a collapse looked inevitable, but Jordan Thompson had other plans.

Counter-attacking with flair, Thompson smashed a quick-fire 57 off 44 balls, including two sixes and eight fours, lifting Yorkshire to a more respectable total. Partnered by the resilient Adam Lyth (30), the pair added 68 for the eighth wicket. Thompson eventually fell lbw to Davey, while Lyth’s defiance ended when he was caught at short leg off Leach, shortly before the teams shook hands at 4:20pm.

With rain impacting all four days of play, a draw had long appeared the likeliest outcome. Somerset, however, will take heart from their bowling performance, securing 14 points from the match to Yorkshire’s nine.
