Holder’s Heroics Keep Patriots' Playoff Hopes Alive; Royals Eliminated from CPL 2025
In a thrilling encounter at the CPL 2025, Jason Holder delivered a match-winning all-round performance to keep the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots’ playoff hopes alive with a dramatic one-run victory over the Barbados Royals, who have now been officially eliminated from the tournament.
With the Patriots defending a modest total of 150 for 7, Holder stepped up in the final over, defending 13 runs under immense pressure. Despite Rassie van der Dussen launching the first ball of the over for six, Holder held his nerve. The equation came down to two runs needed off the final delivery, but the former West Indies captain produced a pinpoint yorker to trap Daniel Sams lbw, sealing a crucial win.
Earlier, Holder played a captain’s knock, anchoring the Patriots’ innings with an unbeaten 53, guiding them from a precarious 62 for 4 at the halfway mark. His 74-run partnership with Navin Bidaisee (30 off 23) revived the innings and helped post a competitive total. Mohammad Rizwan contributed 39 at the top, while Corbin Bosch stood out for the Royals with figures of 3 for 26.
In reply, the Royals got off to a solid start, reaching 44 for 1 in the powerplay, with Brandon King scoring a brisk 29. However, the momentum shifted in the middle overs as the Patriots' bowlers struck regularly. Waqar Salamkheil (2 for 27) and Bidaisee (2 for 24) made key breakthroughs, while Holder chipped in with two wickets during the death overs.
Van der Dussen’s late surge (37* off 27) nearly took the Royals over the line, but they ultimately fell short. Their elimination means the Patriots now sit fifth on the points table with eight points from all completed matches.
However, their playoff fate is still uncertain. Guyana Amazon Warriors, also on eight points, have two matches remaining. A single win from those will be enough to see them through, joining the already-qualified St Lucia Kings, Trinbago Knight Riders, and Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.
For now, it’s Jason Holder and the Patriots who live to fight another day — thanks to a captain’s performance that had both bat and ball doing the talking when it mattered most.
