Ingram Reaches 1000 Runs as Glamorgan Edge Closer to Promotion with Draw at Northamptonshire

Colin Ingram passed the 1000-run mark for a second consecutive season as Glamorgan tightened their grip on second place in Division Two of the County Championship, earning a crucial draw against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Despite rain washing out most of the third day, Glamorgan took full advantage of the remaining time to collect valuable bonus points in the drawn match, finishing with three more than promotion rivals Derbyshire and Middlesex, who also drew at Lord’s. The result means Glamorgan now sit 27 points ahead of Derbyshire and 30 clear of Middlesex in the race for promotion.

Ingram's fluent 55 off 85 balls – featuring 11 boundaries – anchored Glamorgan’s second innings, and brought up his 1000th run of the season in just 10 matches, having missed two games during Marnus Labuschagne’s stint at Sophia Gardens. His innings included a range of attacking strokes, particularly against spin, and was his seventh half-century of the campaign to go along with three centuries.

In partnership with captain Kiran Carlson (37), Ingram added 88 runs for the fourth wicket, stabilizing the innings after an early wobble. Glamorgan eventually declared at 241 for 7, setting Northamptonshire a target of 295, before both sides agreed to a draw at 4.20pm on the final day.

Earlier, Northamptonshire had declared overnight at 413 for 9, 54 runs behind Glamorgan's mammoth first-innings total of 467 for 6, which included a double-century from Asa Tribe. Hoping for quick wickets, Northamptonshire captain Luke Procter struck early, bowling Zain-ul-Hassan with a delivery that jagged back. Justin Broad then claimed two quick wickets – including Tribe for 24 and Sam Northeast for 16 – to reduce Glamorgan to 54 for 3.

Ingram and Carlson rebuilt the innings before spinner Calvin Harrison turned the match again, claiming three wickets in quick succession. He ended with figures of 3 for 46, taking his tally to 35 wickets in nine loan appearances for Northamptonshire this season.

Ingram’s knock ended in an unusual fashion when a miscued sweep shot off Harrison struck his foot and looped up to slip, where Ricardo Vasconcelos completed the catch. Ben Kellaway (18), batting with a runner due to a calf injury, was also bowled attempting a sweep by Harrison.

After tea, Chris Cooke (40*) and Timm van der Gugten added a gritty 50-run stand to steer Glamorgan toward a safe position before the declaration. Van der Gugten’s dismissal for 21 gave debutant Ben Whitehouse his maiden first-class wicket.

The draw, while hard-fought, represents a step forward in Glamorgan’s promotion campaign, with just a few rounds remaining. With Ingram in top form and the team earning crucial points in tight contests, the Welsh county’s hopes of returning to Division One look increasingly promising.
