Leicestershire Sign South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj for 2026 Season

Leicestershire have secured the services of South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj for the first four months of the 2026 season, as the club gears up for its long-awaited return to Division One of the County Championship.

With South Africa’s international calendar offering a rare early-season window, Maharaj will feature in the County Championship’s opening two months before staying on to play the T20 Blast in its entirety. The deal rules him out of the 2026 IPL, where he played two matches for Rajasthan Royals in 2024.

Leicestershire confirmed their promotion to Division One — their first since 2003 — following a hard-fought draw against Gloucestershire on Thursday. The signing of Maharaj, an experienced international spinner with 53 Tests under his belt, is seen as a key move to bolster their red- and white-ball campaigns.

“I've been digging into the history of the club, and it seems like a very exciting time to sign,” Maharaj said. “The boys have done some exceptional work throughout the season and have built some great momentum heading into next year. It's early days, but we're tracking in the right direction, so who knows how far this team can go?”

Maharaj is no stranger to English county cricket, having previously played for Lancashire and Yorkshire. He was also signed by Middlesex for the 2023 season but missed out due to injury.

He will join club captain Peter Handscomb, who recently extended his contract for another year, as one of Leicestershire’s two overseas players at the start of the season. Maharaj’s inclusion also opens up intriguing team combinations alongside Rehan Ahmed, the rising England allrounder now being trialled at No. 3 in red-ball cricket.

Claude Henderson, Leicestershire’s director of cricket, welcomed the addition:
“It’s fantastic to welcome Keshav to Leicestershire,” Henderson said. “Alongside his exceptional cricketing abilities, he will bring vast international experience, leadership skills, and a huge passion for the game — all of which will be fundamental to our changing room.”

Maharaj is the latest in a string of pre-season signings by Leicestershire. The club has already brought in:

  • Steven Eskinazi (top-order batter from Middlesex)

  • Jonny Tattersall (wicketkeeper-batter from Yorkshire)

  • Ben Green and Josh Davey (seam-bowling allrounders from Somerset)

With momentum building on and off the field, Leicestershire are setting their sights high for a competitive return to the top flight in 2026 — and Maharaj could play a central role in that charge.
