Gibson Fires Somerset to Bonus-Point Win Over Warwickshire at Taunton

A blistering half-century from Dani Gibson helped Somerset Women cruise to a dominant four-wicket win over Warwickshire in their final group stage match of the Metro Bank One Day Cup at the Cooper Associates Ground. The win, secured with a bonus point, keeps Somerset’s hopes of qualification alive — with all eyes now turning to Durham vs Surrey to determine their fate.

Chasing a modest target of 176, Gibson smashed 50 off just 30 balls, including six fours and two sixes, in a decisive 78-run stand with Fran Wilson, who finished unbeaten on 47 from 45 balls. Somerset reached the target in just 17.1 overs — with 22.5 overs to spare — to bag the all-important bonus point.

 Gibson Returns with a Bang

Back to full fitness after an injury setback, Gibson looked back to her best. Her aggressive strokeplay dismantled Warwickshire’s bowling attack and ensured Somerset met the bonus-point requirement to stay in contention for the knockout stages.

She was well-supported by Wilson, who used her experience to anchor the innings after early wickets briefly gave Warwickshire hope. Openers Bex Odgers (35) and Niamh Holland (38) had earlier laid the platform with a 64-run opening stand in just 7.2 overs.

 Warwickshire Struggle with the Bat

Earlier, Warwickshire were bundled out for 175 in 41 overs after being sent in to bat on a green-tinged surface. Only Nat Wraith (39), Georgia Davis (36), and Amu Surenkumar (34) showed resistance as Somerset’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance.

  • Ellie Anderson (2 for 21) and Mollie Robbins made early inroads, reducing the visitors to 31 for 3 inside the first seven overs.

  • Spinners Olivia Barnes, Chloe Skelton, and Amanda-Jade Wellington each claimed two wickets, combining to stifle the middle order and accelerate the collapse.

Despite a brief recovery partnership between Wraith and Davis, Warwickshire lost their last four wickets for just 18 runs, falling well short of a competitive total.

 Qualification Scenarios

Somerset’s task was clear: they needed to win with a bonus point and hope that Durham defeat Surrey without conceding one. With their part now complete, Somerset will await the result from Chester-le-Street, which will determine their progression to the semi-finals.
