Paine Backs Konstas to Play His Natural Game in India A Series

As 19-year-old opener Sam Konstas gears up for a crucial phase in his fledgling Test career, Australia A coach Tim Paine has urged the young talent to trust his instincts and play with freedom during the upcoming four-day series against India A in Lucknow.

Following a difficult outing against West Indies where he managed just 50 runs across six innings, Konstas now enters a critical six-week stretch that could define his immediate future in the Australian Test side. While performances in the Sheffield Shield next month are expected to weigh more heavily in Test selection decisions, strong displays in India — particularly against Mohammed Siraj, who is expected to play in the second match — could significantly boost his case.

"We’ll encourage him this series to play it as he sees it," Paine said in Lucknow. "There’s going to be times where it’s hard and he’ll have to soak up pressure, but when he’s on top, we’ll back him in to go hard. He’s exciting — you don’t know what you’re going to get sometimes, but that’s a great part of watching him."

“Still a Long Way From the Finished Product”

Paine acknowledged that Konstas is still learning his craft and figuring out his natural rhythm at the top level, having burst onto the scene with a blistering 60 off 65 balls against India at the MCG last summer, before running into difficult conditions in the Caribbean.

"People forget he’s still only 19," Paine said. "Clearly in Australia we know he’s got a lot of talent. We think he’s going to be a star at international cricket at some stage... He’s working out the best way for him to play — at times aggressive, at times trusting his defence."

Encouragement from Greg Shipperd

Konstas’ New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd also expressed confidence in his young charge, noting signs of significant improvement in recent pre-season matches.

"The work ethic is fantastic," Shipperd said. "He’s got a lot more clarity about how he wants to go about his cricket. A hundred out here the other day was a good signal to the adjustments he’s made since the West Indies."

Shipperd also echoed Usman Khawaja’s recent comments about the challenges of batting on West Indian pitches and noted Konstas had been working on improving his footwork, an area of concern during that series.

Test Spots Up for Grabs

Konstas is part of a strong Australia A squad that includes Nathan McSweeney, who has also opened for Australia A in the past, and Campbell Kellaway, the promising left-hander from Victoria.

Paine made it clear that Test spots are on the line ahead of the home Ashes series against England beginning in late November.

"Certainly the guy sitting next to me [McSweeney] is right on the cusp," Paine said. "If he does well here and starts well in the Shield, there are definitely positions in the Test team that are up for grabs."

What’s Next?

Konstas will look to solidify his position with a strong showing in the two-match unofficial Test series against India A, starting this week in Lucknow. With selectors watching closely and competition heating up, the next few weeks could define whether he keeps his place at the top of Australia’s Test batting order heading into the Ashes.
