Paul Coughlin Signs with Lancashire Ahead of 2026 Season
Lancashire have secured the services of Durham allrounder Paul Coughlin, who will join the county ahead of the 2026 domestic season. The 32-year-old, who came through Durham's academy system, is set to begin a new chapter in his career following limited opportunities this summer.
Coughlin has featured in just five first-team matches across formats for Durham in 2025, including two County Championship appearances. The club confirmed on Sunday that he will depart at the end of his contract.
"I'm thrilled to be making the move to Lancashire," Coughlin said. "It's a club with a great history and big ambitions, and I'm really looking forward to getting started with a new chapter in my career. The chance to commit to Lancashire for the future and be part of what they're looking to achieve here is something that I'm hugely excited about."
Coughlin also highlighted the opportunity to reunite with former Durham teammates Keaton Jennings and Michael Jones, now part of the Lancashire setup.
After beginning his professional career at Durham, Coughlin moved to Nottinghamshire in 2017 and earned England Lions recognition during his stint there. However, injuries hampered his progress, and he returned to Durham in 2019. He played a role in the club’s promotion to Division One in 2023 but has struggled for game time in 2025.
Lancashire, meanwhile, have endured a turbulent season. Head coach Dale Benkenstein stepped down, and Keaton Jennings relinquished the four-day captaincy amid a disappointing County Championship campaign. Although the club reached T20 Blast Finals Day, they were eliminated in the semi-finals by eventual champions Somerset.
Lancashire’s director of cricket performance, Mark Chilton, welcomed the signing:
“We are delighted to have secured Paul’s services as we continue to strengthen our squad ahead of the 2026 season. This move represents an exciting new challenge for Paul, who has already demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level. We believe that a fresh environment will provide the platform for him to return to his very best.
"Paul’s all-round qualities will add significant depth and versatility across both red-ball and white-ball formats, and we look forward to welcoming him to Emirates Old Trafford in the winter.”
Coughlin's arrival is expected to bolster Lancashire’s squad depth as they look to rebuild for a more successful 2026 campaign.
