Patterson’s Century Overshadowed as Tasmania Seal Dramatic Victory with Record Stand

Kurtis Patterson marked the beginning of his domestic season with a commanding century in front of national selector George Bailey, but it wasn’t enough to prevent New South Wales from suffering a heartbreaking two-wicket defeat to Tasmania in the opening match of the Dean Jones Trophy.

Patterson, a former Test player pushing for a national recall ahead of the Ashes, compiled a classy 110 from 125 balls in NSW’s total of 224. However, a remarkable unbeaten 101-run ninth-wicket partnership between Matt Kuhnemann (56*) and Bradley Hope (49*) guided Tasmania to a thrilling win with just four balls to spare.

The game looked firmly in NSW’s grasp when Tasmania slumped to 124 for 8 in the 26th over. Debutant pacer Ryan Hadley struck twice in the second over, removing Mitch Owen and Beau Webster — the latter for a golden duck — while Sean Abbott claimed two quick wickets to leave the visitors reeling at 42 for 4.

Jake Weatherald, another batter in Test contention, offered some resistance with 28 off 51 balls, adding 54 runs alongside veteran Matthew Wade. But after both fell in quick succession — Wade caught and bowled by leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha — Tasmania’s hopes appeared dashed.

What followed was a stunning turnaround. Kuhnemann, better known for his left-arm spin than his batting, brought up his maiden List A half-century off 71 balls, while Hope anchored the innings with a composed 49 from 91 deliveries. Together, they set a new record for Tasmania’s ninth-wicket stand in one-day cricket, steering their team to victory in a match that seemed lost.

Earlier, Patterson had dominated NSW’s innings, reaching his second one-day century in 113 balls. Only Moises Henriques (41) provided notable support, while Sangha was the only other batter to reach double figures. Nathan Ellis (3 for 37) and Beau Webster (3 for 41) led the Tasmanian attack.

Despite Patterson’s performance and a promising bowling effort, NSW were left to rue a missed opportunity as Kuhnemann edged the winning boundary through a vacant slip cordon, sealing an extraordinary win for the Tigers.
