Santner Ruled Out of Australia T20Is as Injuries Hit New Zealand Squad; Jamieson, Sears Return
New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Australia due to ongoing recovery from abdominal surgery, further compounding the Black Caps' injury woes ahead of their first home series of the season.
With Santner unavailable, Michael Bracewell will lead a 14-man squad for the three-match series scheduled for October 1, 3, and 4 in Mount Maunganui. Bracewell previously captained New Zealand during their T20I series in Pakistan earlier this year.
Injury Crisis Hits New Zealand Hard
New Zealand’s squad has been heavily impacted by injuries and absences:
-
Lockie Ferguson (hamstring),
-
Adam Milne (foot),
-
Will O'Rourke (back stress fracture),
-
Glenn Phillips (groin), and
-
Finn Allen (foot)
have all been ruled out, while regular skipper Kane Williamson has made himself unavailable under his casual playing agreement with New Zealand Cricket (NZC).
Despite these setbacks, head coach Rob Walter backed Bracewell to lead the side with confidence.
“Never nice to lose your skipper, but these things do happen,” Walter said. “Michael has already led this team and did a great job against Pakistan.”
Jamieson, Sears Return to Boost Bowling Stocks
There was good news on the pace front, with the return of Kyle Jamieson and Ben Sears to the T20I fold. Jamieson missed the recent tour to Zimbabwe due to the birth of his first child, while Sears was recovering from a side injury.
Walter praised Sears’ recovery and underlined the team’s broader strategy to build depth in the fast bowling department.
“He’s worked incredibly hard over the last 12 weeks... We’re building a bigger base of fast bowlers because the program is so busy these days,” he said.
Sodhi Retained, Conway Holds His Spot
With Santner absent, Ish Sodhi has been retained as the frontline spinner in the smaller squad. Sodhi featured in just two of five matches in Zimbabwe but made a strong impact with figures of 2 for 34 and 4 for 12 in those games.
Devon Conway, who recently signed a casual playing agreement alongside Williamson, Seifert, Allen, and Ferguson, retains his spot in the squad after stepping in late during the Zimbabwe tour.
Strong Australian Challenge Awaits
New Zealand will face a near full-strength Australian team, with only Pat Cummins, Nathan Ellis, and Cameron Green missing. Cummins is managing a lower back issue, Ellis is staying home for the birth of his child, and Green is set to return to first-class cricket with Western Australia to prepare for the Ashes.
Although Mitchell Starc has retired from T20I cricket, his absence has been long-standing since the 2024 World Cup.
Walter is looking forward to the challenge posed by a confident Australian side.
“They play a very aggressive brand, which puts you under pressure... It'll be a lovely test for us to try different approaches.”
