Rain Hampers Progress as Draw Looms in Gloucestershire-Northamptonshire Clash
Persistent rain ensured only 25 overs were possible on day three of the Rothesay County Championship Second Division clash between Gloucestershire and Northamptonshire at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol, all but confirming a draw unless a final-day agreement is reached between the captains.
Resuming at 65 for 3 in reply to Northamptonshire's first-innings total of 206, Gloucestershire battled to 158 for 5 before heavy rain curtailed proceedings just before lunch. Graeme van Buuren (28*) and Jack Taylor (24*) shared an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 51 runs, cutting the deficit to just 48 runs by the time play was abandoned.
The morning session offered a brief window of competitive cricket under leaden skies and with the floodlights in operation. The Northamptonshire seam duo of Ben Sanderson and Justin Broad made early inroads, keeping Gloucestershire's batters on their toes on a pitch still offering movement after overnight rain.
Ollie Price and James Bracey had begun the day cautiously, attempting to consolidate against probing bowling. Their partnership of 64 came off 94 balls, with Price compiling a patient 37 before being bowled by Ben Whitehouse, who found sharp movement off the pitch. Whitehouse struck again shortly after, dismissing Bracey for 36 as he edged to wicketkeeper Lewis McManus, leaving Gloucestershire wobbling at 107 for 5.
However, van Buuren and Taylor then countered effectively. Their positive intent, particularly against legspinner Calvin Harrison and offspinner Nirvan Ramesh, shifted momentum back towards the hosts. A flurry of boundaries saw the pair raise a 50-run partnership from 73 balls, giving Gloucestershire a chance to claw back parity.
But the weather had the final say. Rain forced the players off at 12:30pm, and despite a brief attempt to restart proceedings after an inspection at 1:45pm, worsening conditions led to tea being taken early. A further inspection at 4:15pm confirmed the inevitable — play was abandoned for the day, with 79 overs lost.
With a full day’s play forecast on the final day, a result would likely require a sporting declaration or contrived finish, provided both captains agree. As it stands, Gloucestershire trail by 48 runs with five wickets in hand.
Scores at Stumps, Day 3:
Northamptonshire: 206 all out (Saif Zaib 76, Lewis McManus 44; van Buuren 3-23, Matt Taylor 3-48)
Gloucestershire: 158/5 (van Buuren 28*, Jack Taylor 24*; Whitehouse 2 wickets)
Gloucestershire trail by 48 runs
Weather permitting, day four could offer a chance for some final drama — but only if both teams are willing to take a risk.
