Alleyne and Patil Seal Thrilling Win as Barbados Royals Clinch WCPL Three-Peat
In a dramatic finish to the 2025 Women's Caribbean Premier League (WCPL), Barbados Royals pulled off a stunning come-from-behind victory to beat Guyana Amazon Warriors by three wickets and complete a historic three-peat in the tournament.
Chasing 137, the Royals found themselves in deep trouble at 110 for 7, needing 27 runs off the final 16 deliveries. With just three wickets in hand and debutant Shreyanka Patil facing a potential hat-trick ball, the odds seemed stacked against them. But Patil calmly reverse-swept her first two deliveries to relieve the pressure, before Aaliyah Alleyne hammered a four and a six in a 15-run over to turn the tide.
Moments later, Alleyne sealed the win with a boundary, collapsing to the ground in celebration as teammates rushed onto the field. The Royals had not only pulled off a thrilling win but had also etched their names in history with three consecutive WCPL titles.
Munisar’s Heroics in Vain
While the Royals celebrated, it was heartbreak for the Amazon Warriors, particularly for Ashmini Munisar, who had almost single-handedly pulled her team back into contention. The 21-year-old offspinner finished with outstanding figures of 3 for 21, including a maiden over, and was involved in four of the seven dismissals.
Munisar’s game-changing moment came in the 14th over with a wicket-maiden that saw the end of the well-set Kycia Knight for 31. In her final over, she removed Courtney Webb (31) and Afy Fletcher in successive deliveries, finishing the tournament as the joint-highest wicket-taker. Earlier, she also held onto a sharp catch at backward square-leg to dismiss the dangerous Chinelle Henry.
However, her efforts ultimately went in vain as Alleyne and Patil stitched together a match-winning partnership in the dying moments of the game.
Contrasting Starts Set the Tone
The difference in approach between the two sides was evident from the outset. Chamari Athapaththu, the tournament’s Player of the Series, gave the Royals a flying start by hitting two boundaries in the opening over. In contrast, Amazon Warriors managed just four fours in their powerplay, the first coming only on the 20th delivery.
Earlier, the Warriors, after being put in to bat, struggled for momentum despite losing only three wickets. Opener Amy Hunter managed just 4 runs before falling in the 13th over. A significant blow came when veteran Stafanie Taylor had to be stretchered off with a leg injury while batting on 15. She did not return to the field.
A late flourish from Shemaine Campbelle and Dane van Niekerk, who added 56 runs in an unbroken partnership, gave Warriors a defendable total of 136 for 3.
Royals’ Resilience Shines Through
Despite a mid-innings collapse of 5 for 29, the Royals' composure under pressure stood out. Knight and Webb had kept the chase steady after Athapaththu’s early dismissal, but it was the unexpected heroics of Patil, playing her first game of the season, and Alleyne that ensured the Royals remained unbeaten in the tournament.
The victory marked Barbados Royals' third consecutive WCPL title, reinforcing their dominance in women’s T20 cricket in the Caribbean.
