Jurel's Century Powers India A's Strong Comeback Against Australia A
Dhruv Jurel struck a commanding century on a rain-affected third day in the first unofficial Test between India A and Australia A, as the hosts mounted a resilient comeback in Lucknow. The match now appears to be heading for a draw, with India A closing the day at 403/4, still trailing by 129 runs.
Persistent rain delays again affected proceedings, but when play finally resumed, Sai Sudharsan and N Jagadeesan resumed positively. The partnership was broken when Xavier Bartlett dismissed Jagadeesan, but the Australians were unable to seize control.
Devdutt Padikkal then joined Sudharsan and the pair put on 80 runs for the third wicket, both registering half-centuries. Cooper Connolly provided a breakthrough by trapping Sudharsan LBW for 73, and moments later, the visitors struck again, removing Shreyas Iyer cheaply — the only India A batter dismissed for single digits in the innings.
At 222/4, and still facing a deficit of over 300 runs, India A needed stability. Padikkal found the perfect partner in Jurel, whose fluent and aggressive batting shifted the momentum. While Padikkal remained composed at one end, Jurel launched a counter-attack, clearing the ropes four times en route to a brilliant unbeaten 113.
The partnership not only brought India A past the 400-run mark, but also helped cut significantly into Australia A’s first-innings total of 532/6 declared. Padikkal also remained unbeaten on 86, having anchored the innings with patience and discipline.
With just one day remaining and the pitch showing little sign of deterioration, the likelihood of a draw is high — unless Australia A can engineer a dramatic turnaround with an early morning session blitz on the final day.
