Samson, Abhishek Shine as India Post 188 Against Oman in Asia Cup Dead Rubber
India posted a competitive 188 for 8 against Oman in their final Group A fixture of the Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi, with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma leading the way in what was effectively a dead rubber before the Super Four stage.
With qualification already secured, India made several changes to their playing XI, opting to rest frontline bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy. Captain Suryakumar Yadav also chose not to bat, even though India lost eight wickets, as the team experimented with its lineup ahead of the crucial next phase.
Abhishek Sharma gave India a flying start, smashing 38 off just 15 balls, including five fours and two sixes. He was given a life on 21 when Oman's wicketkeeper Vinayak Shukla dropped a catch down the leg side. However, Abhishek couldn’t make it count for long, eventually edging behind for Shukla’s redemption.
Sanju Samson anchored the innings with a stop-start 56 off 45 deliveries. After a slow beginning—reaching 13 off 14 balls—he accelerated with a six and a four off wristspinner Samay Shrivatsava. A straight six off Zikria Islam further pushed his momentum, but he struggled to maintain the tempo throughout and was dismissed shortly after bringing up his half-century in the 18th over.
India’s middle and lower order couldn’t fully capitalize on the platform laid by the top order, managing only 21 runs in the last three overs. Harshit Rana, batting at No. 8, added a late flourish with an unbeaten 13 off 8 balls, including a six over point to end the innings.
Oman’s bowlers put up a spirited performance, with Faisal Shah, Jiten Ramanandi, and Aamir Kaleem sharing six wickets among them. Faisal was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 2 for 23.
Despite the match being inconsequential in terms of qualification, India will be pleased with the batting time for some of their fringe players. The focus now shifts to their high-stakes Super Four clash against Pakistan in Dubai.
