Abhishek Sharma Responds to Pakistan's Aggression with Blistering Knock as India Seal Asia Cup Win
In a high-octane Super Fours clash of the Asia Cup 2025, India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by six wickets, thanks to a stunning 39-ball 74 from opener Abhishek Sharma. The match, played under a tense political and emotional backdrop, saw tempers flare on the field and off, with Abhishek delivering a strong statement both with his bat and his words.
Abhishek and fellow opener Shubman Gill stitched together a 105-run opening stand in just 59 balls, laying a solid foundation for India’s chase of 172. Their aggressive start left Pakistan’s bowlers visibly rattled, triggering on-field altercations that included animated exchanges with fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf.
Speaking after receiving the Player-of-the-Match award, Abhishek didn’t hold back. “The way they were coming at us without any reason, I didn't like it at all,” he said. “I thought this was the only answer I could give—with my bat and by contributing to the win. I just wanted to deliver for my team.”
Tensions between the two sides have been running high throughout the tournament, with India reportedly refusing to shake hands with Pakistani players, prompting an official protest by Pakistan. The situation nearly escalated into a boycott, adding to the already fiery rivalry.
On the field, the aggression was palpable. Rauf was seen gesturing toward the Indian crowd after being taunted with “Kohli, Kohli” chants—at one point mimicking an aircraft nosedive after signaling a six.
But Abhishek, unfazed, led India’s aggressive reply. His innings, which included six fours and five sixes, began with a statement shot—a six off the very first ball from Afridi, going one better than the first-ball four he struck in the group-stage meeting.
Reflecting on his partnership with Gill, Abhishek credited their long-standing friendship and understanding. “We've been playing together since our school days. The way he was giving it back, I really enjoyed it from the other end,” he said.
India’s chase wasn’t without its challenges. Pakistan, riding on a strong start from Sahibzada Farhan and Saim Ayub, posted 91 for 1 in the first 10 overs. But India clawed their way back, conceding just 80 runs in the second half. Allrounder Shivam Dube played a crucial role with the ball, picking up 2 for 33 in his four overs.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav praised the team’s resilience. “The boys showed a lot of character and composure. After 10 overs, I told them the game starts now. Everyone stepped up,” he said.
On the batting front, Suryakumar hailed the “fire and ice” combination of Abhishek and Gill. “The way Abhishek complements Shubman’s style is amazing. We needed someone to bat through the first 10–12 overs and they gave us that platform.”
Even though Jasprit Bumrah had an off day—conceding 45 runs in his four overs—Suryakumar was quick to defend his strike bowler. “He’s not a robot. He can have an off day. What matters is how he comes back, and we know he always does.”
India’s victory over Pakistan marks their second win in the Super Fours and solidifies their position at the top of the table. As political tensions simmer in the background, the players continue to let their cricket do the talking—with Abhishek Sharma’s fiery knock serving as both a performance and a pointed reply.
