Rahul Chahar Joins Surrey for Final County Championship Clash Against Hampshire
India legspinner Rahul Chahar has joined Surrey for their crucial final County Championship match of the 2025 season against Hampshire, set to take place at the Utilita Bowl this week. The 26-year-old arrives as a timely reinforcement as Surrey aims to secure their fourth consecutive Championship title.
Chahar had been registered with Surrey earlier this month in compliance with ECB regulations, but was not utilized in their recent home fixtures against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire. The latter match ended in a narrow 20-run defeat, allowing Nottinghamshire to take control of the title race heading into the final round.
With both of Surrey's frontline spinners — Will Jacks and Cam Steel — sidelined due to injury, Chahar’s inclusion is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the bowling attack. Originally, Surrey had planned to bring back Indian left-arm spinner Sai Kishore, but a finger injury requiring surgery ruled him out of contention.
“We always knew that we would be missing players for the final period of the season and tried to plan accordingly,” said Alec Stewart, Surrey’s High-Performance Advisor. “Adding Rahul to the squad gives us another spin option at the Utilita Bowl.”
Chahar, who has played one ODI and six T20Is for India between 2019 and 2021, has a strong domestic record. Representing Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy, he has claimed 87 wickets in 24 first-class matches at an average of 26.12, with best match figures of 9 for 148. He also made a brief appearance in the 2025 IPL as an impact substitute for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Expressing his enthusiasm ahead of the fixture, Chahar said: “I’m excited to join Surrey for this week’s match. I’m coming here to have an impact and help the team in their final match of the season.”
Surrey currently trail Nottinghamshire by 14 points. To claim the Championship, they must win their final match and hope that Notts earn fewer than 11 points in their fixture against Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.
