ICC Suspends USA Cricket Over Governance Issues, But T20 World Cup Participation Unaffected

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket (USAC), citing governance and leadership concerns, in a move that marks a significant step toward overhauling the administration of cricket in one of the sport’s emerging markets. The decision was made during a virtual ICC Board meeting held on Tuesday.

Despite the suspension, the United States will still participate in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to begin in February 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. The ICC confirmed that the national team’s World Cup campaign would remain unaffected.

Governance Failures Trigger Action

While the ICC has yet to publicly disclose the exact reasons for the suspension, it comes after USAC failed to comply with governance reform requirements set out by the global governing body. In July 2025, the ICC had given USAC a three-month window to conduct “free and fair elections” and implement comprehensive reforms. The organization had already been "on notice" since July 2024.

The ICC Board had warned that it reserved the right to take necessary actions depending on USAC’s progress. With no significant improvements observed, the Board has now acted decisively.

ESPNcricinfo has reached out to USAC chairman Venu Pisike for comment.

No Immediate Impact on LA28 Olympics

Crucially, the suspension does not immediately impact cricket’s inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The ICC had recently outlined a six-step "roadmap" to help USAC achieve National Governing Body (NGB) status with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC)—a mandatory requirement for participation in LA28.

As the host nation, the USA is expected to field teams in both the men's and women's Olympic cricket tournaments. The roadmap, created by the ICC’s Normalisation Committee chaired by Jay Shah, required USAC to bring in three new independent directors, dissolve its current board, hold new elections, and initiate a full constitutional review.

Leadership Vacuum and Legal Disputes

It remains unclear who will oversee day-to-day cricket operations in the USA following the suspension. The development is expected to further complicate an already tense situation within the US cricket ecosystem.

USAC is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with its former commercial partner, American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), the entity behind Major League Cricket and Minor League Cricket. USAC's recent termination of its agreement with ACE has led the latter to take legal action.

Former New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson, who now serves as operational director of the USA Cricketers Association, voiced concern over the impact of the USAC–ACE dispute on players. “It’s left players in limbo, uncertain of their futures,” Anderson said.

What's Next?

With USAC now suspended and no interim leadership named, the ICC may look to install an independent administrator or temporary committee to oversee cricket operations in the USA until reforms are in place. Meanwhile, the focus will remain on stabilizing governance in a market the ICC considers vital for the sport’s global growth.
