Thornton’s All-Round Show Puts Australia A in Command Against India A in Second Unofficial Test
Henry Thornton produced a memorable all-round performance to put Australia A firmly in control on day two of the second unofficial Test against India A in Lucknow. The fast bowler was pivotal with both bat and ball, helping Australia A to a dominant position with a 242-run lead at stumps.
Batting at No. 11, Thornton scored an unbeaten 32 in a crucial 91-run stand for the last wicket with Todd Murphy, who top-scored with a resilient 76. The pair frustrated India A's bowlers on the second morning, lifting Australia A from 329 for 9 to 420 all out.
“We were just having fun out there. It was a good challenge to test ourselves against quality bowling,” Thornton said. “The plan was simple—hit the ball if they missed, and it came off today.”
Thornton carried his momentum into his primary discipline, claiming 4 for 36 as India A struggled in reply. His burst after lunch, where he dismissed N Jagadeesan (38), Devdutt Padikkal (1), and captain Dhruv Jurel (1) in quick succession, derailed the Indian innings.
Murphy followed up his heroics with the bat by picking up 2 for 38 with his off-spin, including the key wicket of Nitish Kumar Reddy. India A, who at one stage were reeling at 75 for 5, showed some resistance through B Sai Sudharsan, who struck a composed 75 and added 51 runs with Ayush Badoni (21) for the sixth wicket.
However, wickets kept falling at regular intervals. A brief cameo from Prasidh Krishna, including a four and a six, was cut short when he was struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Thornton in the 39th over. Though he continued for a few more overs, Prasidh eventually walked off due to a suspected concussion and was replaced by Yash Thakur under concussion protocols.
India A were bowled out for 194, conceding a 226-run first-innings lead.
Australia A Decide to Bat Again
Opting not to enforce the follow-on, Australia A began their second innings but faced early setbacks. Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, and Manav Suthar each struck to reduce the visitors to 16 for 3 at stumps. Suthar, who took 5 for 107 in the first innings, continued his strong form by removing Oliver Peake with his fifth ball.
Top-order batters Sam Konstas and Campbell Kellaway, who had impressed earlier in the series, fell cheaply. Konstas, in particular, registered his first single-digit score of the series after a century in the first match and 49 in the first innings here.
Nathan McSweeney, who scored 74 in the first innings, remained unbeaten at stumps, holding the innings together for Australia A.
With more than two days left in the match and a 242-run lead, Australia A will look to build on their advantage and push for a series-leveling win.
