R Ashwin Signs Landmark Deal with Sydney Thunder for Two BBL Seasons

In a historic move, Ravichandran Ashwin has signed a two-season contract with Sydney Thunder, becoming the first capped India men’s international to play in the Big Bash League (BBL). The former India offspinner, who retired from the IPL earlier this year, will make his BBL debut in January 2026, marking a major milestone for the league and Indian cricket.

Availability and BBL Debut

Ashwin’s commitment to the International League T20 (ILT20), which runs from December 2 to January 4, means he will miss the early part of the BBL season, which begins on December 14. However, he is expected to be available for Thunder’s final three regular-season games — scheduled for January 10, 12, and 16 — and the finals series (January 20–25), provided his ILT20 team doesn’t reach the UAE league’s knockout stages.

Trailblazing Signing

While India’s women cricketers have been regulars in the WBBL, this is the first time a centrally capped India male player has joined the BBL. Previous Indian-origin players like Unmukt Chand and Nikhil Chaudhary featured in the league but did so after shifting allegiance or gaining domestic status.

Ashwin’s move became possible after his IPL retirement, allowing him to explore overseas T20 opportunities. He has also registered for the upcoming ILT20 auction with the highest base price, making his return to T20 franchise cricket a significant talking point.

Hot Property: Thunder Win Race Against Rival BBL Clubs

Ashwin was courted by multiple BBL franchises, including the Sydney Sixers, Hobart Hurricanes, and Adelaide Strikers, after he held discussions with Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg and league officials. He ultimately chose the Thunder, with former Australia fast bowler Trent Copeland, now Thunder's General Manager, orchestrating the signing.

Thunder are coached by Trevor Bayliss and captained by David Warner, setting up the possibility of Ashwin and Warner, once fierce rivals on the field, joining forces in a high-profile partnership.

Squad Composition and Strategy

Ashwin joins a Thunder roster already stacked with spin options. The club’s overseas contingent includes Sam Billings, Lockie Ferguson, and Shadab Khan, while local spinners Chris Green, Tanveer Sangha, and Tom Andrews are already on the books. With only three overseas players allowed in a match XI, Thunder’s squad strategy will require flexibility.

The Thunder currently have 17 players signed, one short of the league’s 18-player limit. Despite not nominating for the June overseas draft — due to still being active in the IPL at the time — Ashwin qualifies under the BBL’s “changing circumstances” exemption for international players. Similar exceptions were previously granted to Martin Guptill and Nat Sciver-Brunt in earlier seasons.

Ashwin will reportedly be on a high per-game salary, managed within the Thunder’s salary cap. While Lockie Ferguson is already on the league’s top Aus$420,000 salary band, Thunder have room to maneuver thanks to a clause allowing a Aus$150,000 salary cap overrun, which can be offset across future seasons. Ashwin has also signed a marketing agreement with Cricket Australia, which does not impact the salary cap.

Derby Drama: Ashwin vs Smith, Babar in Sydney Showdown

Ashwin’s arrival sets up a tantalising Sydney derby, with the Thunder set to face Sydney Sixers, who boast a star-studded lineup including Steven Smith and Babar Azam. The clash could see Ashwin bowl to Smith — one of his most storied rivals — in one of the most anticipated matchups of the BBL season.

What It Means for the BBL

Ashwin’s signing is not just a coup for the Thunder, but a statement move for the BBL, which has been striving to compete with the IPL and other T20 leagues for global relevance and star power. His experience, skill, and international profile are expected to bring significant fan engagement, media attention, and commercial value to the league.

Looking Ahead

Ashwin’s debut will mark a new chapter in his storied career, which includes over 700 international wickets, multiple IPL titles, and a reputation as one of cricket’s sharpest tactical minds. As Thunder aim to go one better after finishing runners-up last season, Ashwin’s arrival could provide the edge they need to lift the trophy.
