Middlesex Teenager Sebastian Morgan Falls Agonisingly Short of Maiden Century at Lord’s

Middlesex teenager Sebastian Morgan narrowly missed out on a maiden first-class century, falling for a valiant 97, as he and captain Leus du Plooy shared a record-breaking eighth-wicket partnership of 179 against Gloucestershire in their final Rothesay County Championship match of the season.

The 18-year-old, making just his third first-class appearance, showed composure and flair beyond his years in a remarkable innings that helped Middlesex post a mammoth 634 for 9 declared, the joint fifth-highest total in the county’s history.

Du Plooy, who joined Middlesex from Derbyshire in 2024, led from the front with a career-best unbeaten 263, putting the visitors under immense pressure at the Home of Cricket. His partnership with Morgan was a county record for the eighth wicket against Gloucestershire.

Du Plooy Dominates, Morgan Impresses

Resuming the day on 514 for 7, Middlesex added crucial runs through du Plooy and Morgan. Du Plooy batted with patience and poise, reaching his double century with a boundary off Ollie Price, eventually finishing on 263 not out from 373 balls — the highest score of his career.

Morgan, meanwhile, began confidently, striking early boundaries and rotating the strike effectively. He reached his half-century with a neat clip off Ajeet Singh Dale and continued to frustrate the Gloucestershire attack with innovative strokeplay, including well-executed reverse and slog sweeps.

However, his dream of a maiden ton came to an end when he misjudged a reverse sweep against Price and was stumped by James Bracey for 97. The teenager received a warm ovation as he walked off, having played a key role in one of Middlesex’s most memorable partnerships in recent years.

Singh Dale Claims Five, But Middlesex in Command

Ajeet Singh Dale, playing his final match for Gloucestershire, was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5 for 108, including the early wicket of Joe Cracknell on the second morning. He could have had more, but was denied by a dropped catch off Zafar Gohar.

Graeme van Buuren and Ollie Price chipped in with a wicket apiece, but the Middlesex total had already ballooned beyond 600 by the time the declaration came.

Gloucestershire Lose Early Momentum After Promising Start

In reply, Gloucestershire openers Ben Charlesworth (63) and Joe Phillips (36) provided a solid start, adding over 100 runs before a dramatic collapse saw three wickets fall for just eight runs.

Charlesworth batted fluently, striking successive boundaries off Noah Cornwell to bring up his fifty at nearly a run a ball. He eventually fell to Roland-Jones, caught behind after attempting a cut shot.

Gohar, playing against his former side, then struck twice in quick succession — trapping Phillips lbw and removing Miles Hammond with a looping bat-pad catch.

Despite the flurry of wickets, Ollie Price and James Bracey steadied the ship to take Gloucestershire to 146 for 3 at stumps, still 488 runs behind and 339 short of avoiding the follow-on.
