Jediah Blades Replaces Injured Alzarri Joseph in West Indies Test Squad for India Series

West Indies have been forced into another change to their Test squad ahead of the upcoming two-match series against India, with Alzarri Joseph ruled out due to a lower-back injury. The 23-year-old left-arm seamer Jediah Blades has been named as his replacement.

According to a statement from Cricket West Indies (CWI), Joseph reported discomfort during training, and subsequent scans revealed a “degeneration of the previously resolved lower-back injury.” His absence is a major blow to a West Indies pace attack already missing Shamar Joseph, who was ruled out last week and replaced by uncapped allrounder Johann Layne.

Holder Unavailable, Blades Steps In

Veteran allrounder Jason Holder, who is currently part of the T20I squad in the UAE for a series against Nepal, was approached to replace Joseph but declined due to a planned medical procedure.

As a result, the selectors turned to Blades, who is also in the UAE with the T20I squad. He will join the Test side after the final T20I on Tuesday, ahead of the series opener in Ahmedabad on October 1.

Blades Yet to Debut in Tests

Blades, 23, is uncapped at Test level but has already represented West Indies in three ODIs and four T20Is. In 13 first-class matches, he has taken 35 wickets at an average of 35.91. While still relatively raw in the longer format, Blades offers a left-arm angle that could be useful on Indian pitches.

Bowling Resources Depleted

The absence of both Josephs — Alzarri and Shamar — significantly weakens the West Indies fast-bowling department. Jayden Seales, with just over 10 Tests under his belt, is now the most experienced pacer in the squad.

The bowling group now features a mix of youth and inexperience, with seamers Seales, Anderson Phillip, Johann Layne, and Blades likely to share the pace responsibilities. The spin unit includes Jomel Warrican, Khary Pierre, and captain Roston Chase.
