South Africa’s T20I Series Against West Indies Reduced to Three Matches Due to T20 World Cup Clash
South Africa's only men's international home series of the 2025–26 season has been trimmed from five T20Is to three following a scheduling clash with the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Originally slated to run from January 27 to February 6, the series against West Indies will now conclude by January 31, aligning with the ICC’s mandatory support period ahead of the global tournament. As a result, two matches have been cut, with Cape Town’s Newlands and East London’s Buffalo Park dropped as host venues.
Revised Fixtures and Venues
The updated three-match series will now be played at:
-
January 27 – Boland Park, Paarl
-
January 29 – SuperSport Park, Centurion
-
January 31 – Wanderers, Johannesburg (also designated as Pink Day)
The final T20I at the Wanderers will double as South Africa’s annual Pink Day, an event dedicated to raising awareness and funds for breast cancer treatment, where players traditionally wear pink kits.
Tight Home Season for South Africa
This shortened series reflects a heavily curtailed home summer for the Proteas, who will be playing away for the bulk of the season. South Africa begin their World Test Championship (WTC) title defence in Pakistan next month, a tour that includes three ODIs and three T20Is.
That will be followed by a high-profile all-format tour of India, which features two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is, concluding just before the home series against the West Indies.
Additional Under-19 Fixtures Added
To compensate for limited senior men’s fixtures, three Under-19 ODIs against India have been scheduled between January 3 and 7 at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. These matches will serve as preparation for the 2026 ICC Under-19 World Cup, co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia, with official fixtures for that tournament still pending.
Focus on 2027 ODI World Cup Preparations
The lack of home international fixtures is also due to stadium upgrades and pitch redevelopment projects across the country ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, which South Africa will co-host alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia. Several venues are currently installing drop-in pitches, limiting their availability for the current season.
SA20 to Headline Domestic Summer
With limited international action at home, the SA20 league will take centre stage. The tournament is set to begin on Boxing Day (December 26) and will run through the festive season, providing domestic cricket fans with a marquee event.
