Debutants Layne and Pierre Feature as West Indies Elect to Bat First Against India in Ahmedabad Test
West Indies captain Roston Chase won the toss and opted to bat on a green-tinged surface at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, as the visitors look to end a near 30-year drought without a Test victory in India. Despite the pitch appearing lively and having been under covers for several days, both teams have leaned heavily on spin, expecting the surface to deteriorate as the match progresses.
India captain Shubman Gill admitted he wasn't too disappointed at losing the toss, acknowledging that conditions early on could aid the fast bowlers. Nonetheless, the hosts have packed their XI with spin options, including the returning Kuldeep Yadav, who did not feature during the recent England tour. Allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, along with Kuldeep, form the spin trio, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj take up the pace duties. Young allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, back from a knee injury, adds balance to the lineup.
With Rishabh Pant still recovering from a fractured left foot, Dhruv Jurel takes the wicketkeeping gloves. Devdutt Padikkal, the extra batter in the squad, was left out of the playing XI.
For the West Indies, the absence of key pacers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph due to injury, along with Jason Holder's unavailability for medical reasons, opened the door for two debutants. Johann Layne, a promising allrounder from Barbados with 66 first-class wickets at an average of 22, makes his Test debut. Joining him is 34-year-old Khary Pierre, the left-arm spinner from Trinidad, who was rewarded for a stellar domestic season in the West Indies Championship.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul returns to the top of the order alongside John Campbell, while Brandon King moves down the batting order. Shai Hope keeps wickets, and the experienced spin duo of Jomel Warrican and Khary Pierre will shoulder the spin burden.
India, currently eyeing valuable World Test Championship points, are expected to be favourites at home. However, West Indies will hope their fresh faces and a confident top order can make a mark in challenging conditions.
