Injury Blow for New Zealand as Flora Devonshire Ruled Out of ODI World Cup

New Zealand have been dealt an early setback in their ODI World Cup campaign, with left-arm spinner Flora Devonshire ruled out of the tournament after sustaining a laceration to her bowling hand during a training session.

The 22-year-old, who was set to make her debut at an ODI World Cup, will require two to three weeks to recover, effectively ending her participation in the competition. In her place, experienced seamer Hannah Rowe has been approved as a replacement by the ICC.

“It’s a real shame for Flora,” said head coach Ben Sawyer. “She worked hard to earn her spot in this squad and it's tough to see her miss out like this. We’re all feeling for her.”

Rowe, a 60-ODI veteran, will be making her third appearance at a 50-over World Cup. Though not a direct replacement in terms of skillset, her all-round capabilities and experience are seen as valuable assets, particularly in sub-continent conditions.

“We’re pleased to be able to call up a senior player in Hannah Rowe,” Sawyer added. “She’s not a like-for-like replacement for Flora, but she brings versatility and World Cup experience, which is crucial in a tournament like this.”

Rowe will join the squad on October 7 and will miss New Zealand’s upcoming clash against South Africa on October 6 in Indore. The team, having lost their opening match to Australia by 89 runs, will look to bounce back before heading to Guwahati to face Bangladesh on October 10.
