Silk, Weatherald, Hope Lead Tasmania Fightback After Rocky Start in Sheffield Shield Opener

Tasmania staged a remarkable recovery on day one of their Sheffield Shield clash against Queensland at Allan Border Field, finishing at 299 for 6 after an early top-order collapse threatened to derail their innings.

Captain Jordan Silk led from the front with a composed 104, while Bradley Hope (76) and opener Jake Weatherald (67) provided vital support to put the visitors in a strong position by stumps.

Weatherald Makes Most of Early Let-Off

Weatherald, who is firmly in contention for an Ashes call-up, was given an early life on just 4 when Test opener Usman Khawaja dropped a regulation chance at first slip off Jack Wildermuth. He capitalised immediately, striking two boundaries in the same over and eventually compiling a fluent 67 off 99 balls, with eight fours.

The left-hander's recent form has been impossible to ignore. He was last season's leading Shield run-scorer and struck a brilliant 183 for Australia A against Sri Lanka in July, making him one of the frontrunners to open for Australia this summer.

Weatherald shared a crucial 80-run fourth-wicket partnership with Silk before falling to a superb one-handed return catch by Michael Neser, who was Queensland’s best bowler on the day, finishing with 2 for 53 from 18 overs.

Silk Anchors the Innings

Silk continued to anchor the innings with characteristic patience and composure. His 104 from 170 balls was his 13th first-class century and came at a critical time, with Tasmania teetering at 33 for 3 early in the day after electing to bat first.

He looked set to push on before falling to Mitch Swepson, offering a leading edge for a caught-and-bowled dismissal. The frustration was evident, with Silk visibly annoyed at the manner of his dismissal after doing the hard work.

Hope Provides Stability in the Middle Order

Allrounder Brad Hope then stepped up with a gritty 76 from 171 deliveries, steadying the innings further after Silk's dismissal. His patient knock was eventually ended by Wildermuth, who trapped him lbw late in the day.

Jake Doran and Nikhil Chaudhary remained unbeaten at stumps, ready to build on the platform laid by the middle order when play resumes on day two.

Webster Sidelined

Tasmania were without Beau Webster, who was ruled out of the match due to a minor ankle injury. His absence was a setback, but the contributions of Silk, Hope and Weatherald helped steady the ship.

Scorecard Summary (Day 1)

Tasmania 299 for 6 (Silk 104, Hope 76, Weatherald 67; Neser 2-53)

Tasmania will aim to push past the 350-mark on day two, while Queensland will be looking for early breakthroughs to halt their momentum.
