Shubman Gill Named India's New ODI Captain, Replaces Rohit Sharma Ahead of Australia Series

India has appointed Shubman Gill as their new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, starting October 19. The decision marks a significant shift in India's white-ball leadership, with selectors eyeing long-term planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Despite being relieved of the captaincy, Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli, has been named in the squad and will return to international cricket for the first time since the 2025 Champions Trophy in March. The selection signals a transitional phase, with Gill being groomed as India's white-ball leader of the future.

Leadership Transition Aimed at 2027 World Cup

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed the captaincy change during a press conference in Ahmedabad, where India had just completed a dominant Test victory over West Indies. He said the decision was taken in coordination with head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, keeping in mind the limited opportunities in the 50-over format before the next World Cup.

"At some stage, you have to start looking ahead to where the next World Cup is," Agarkar said. "We are still two years away, but you don’t get many ODIs in a cycle anymore. Giving Shubman time to settle in as captain now gives him the best chance to prepare."

Gill’s Growing Leadership Role

At 26, Gill is now India's full-time Test and ODI captain, while also serving as vice-captain in T20Is. He took over as Test captain following Rohit's retirement from the longest format in May, and made an immediate impact — leading India to a 2-2 draw in England and finishing as the series' top run-scorer with 754 runs at 75.40.

Agarkar acknowledged the concerns of workload management but said the team management would handle it carefully to avoid burnout.

"Hopefully there is no burnout. Yes, there’s a lot of cricket coming up, but we will manage it as best as we can," he said.

Rohit’s Captaincy Legacy

Rohit, 38, bows out of ODI captaincy with an impressive record. Since taking over in December 2021, he led India in 56 ODIs, winning 42, losing 12, with one tie and one no-result. Under his leadership:

  • India won the 2023 Asia Cup

  • Reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup

  • Won the 2025 Champions Trophy

He had earlier captained India to the 2018 Asia Cup title as a stand-in.

Kohli, Rohit Return to ODI Setup

With both Kohli and Rohit having retired from Tests and T20Is, the upcoming ODI series marks their return to international cricket after more than seven months. They are also expected to feature in upcoming home ODI series against South Africa (Nov-Dec) and New Zealand (Jan 2026).

India’s ODI Schedule in Australia

  • 1st ODI – October 19

  • 2nd ODI – October 23

  • 3rd ODI – October 25
    Followed by a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8

This marks a new era in Indian cricket, with Gill taking over the ODI reins from one of the country's most successful captains as the team begins building towards another World Cup challenge.
