Simmons Applauds Bangladesh's 'Exciting, Aggressive' Style After T20I Series Win Over Afghanistan
Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons has expressed satisfaction with his team’s "exciting, aggressive" approach in their ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan, which they have already clinched with a 2-0 lead. The Tigers overcame early setbacks in both matches to pull off successful chases, showcasing their growing depth and maturity in T20 cricket.
Simmons was particularly pleased with the performance of the lower middle order and the bowling unit, who were instrumental in both victories.
“The good thing about winning close games is that it builds confidence,” Simmons said after the second T20I. “It's not good for our hearts, but it’s great to see different parts of the team stepping up. Yesterday the openers stood up, and today, it was the lower middle order.”
In the series opener, Bangladesh suffered a dramatic collapse, losing six wickets for just nine runs against the spin threat of Rashid Khan. However, Nurul Hasan and Rishad Hossain rescued the innings with a calm finish. In the second match, despite losing three wickets during the powerplay, the middle order once again stood firm. Nurul, in particular, anchored the chase with an unbeaten 31, following up on his vital contribution in the first match.
“Nurul played a really great knock and brought us back into the game,” Simmons said. “Jaker [Ali] and Shamim [Hossain] started the recovery, and Nurul finished it for us. That’s what we’ve been asking – for batters to take responsibility.”
Jaker Ali, who had been under scrutiny for a run of low scores, also found form with a 32 off 25 balls, including his first six in seven innings. Simmons dismissed concerns about his captain’s form.
“International batsmen go through tough patches. It’s normal. He had a couple of bad games, but I don’t see any problem,” he said.
Bangladesh’s bowlers also received high praise, with Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, and Mohammad Saifuddin leading the attack. The bowling unit has successfully restricted Afghanistan in both matches, conceding just 35 runs in the powerplay and 40 runs in the final five overs of the second T20I.
“Our bowling has been consistently improving,” Simmons noted. “We’re now at a stage where we can rely on our bowlers, no matter the combination. Over the last six or seven weeks, the attack has matured and helped put us in winning positions.”
Bangladesh will look to complete a clean sweep in the final match of the series, buoyed by their newfound confidence and aggressive brand of cricket under Simmons' leadership.
