Renshaw, Khawaja, Labuschagne Shine as Queensland Dominate Tasmania in Sheffield Shield Clash
Queensland’s top order made a strong statement on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash against Tasmania, piling on 248 for 1 in response to Tasmania's first-innings total of 379 at Allan Border Field. With Matt Renshaw finishing unbeaten on 114 and Marnus Labuschagne on 54*, the hosts trail by just 131 runs with nine wickets in hand, setting the stage for a potentially match-defining performance.
Renshaw Stakes Ashes Claim
Matt Renshaw led the charge with a commanding century — his 24th in first-class cricket — keeping himself firmly in the frame for Australia's Ashes squad. The left-handed opener, who has averaged 34 and 29 in the last two Shield seasons, looked composed and focused throughout his innings, striking 14 boundaries and a six.
"It's hard — you have to get rid of a lot of external noise, off your phone and stuff — but I just want to go out there and play," Renshaw said after the day’s play. "I know that when I'm doing my job for Queensland, we're generally winning games."
He shared a crucial 137-run opening partnership with Usman Khawaja, who was playing his first innings since July’s third Test against the West Indies. Khawaja looked fluent before falling for 69, gloving an attempted pull shot off Kieran Elliott to wicketkeeper Jake Doran.
Labuschagne Finds Form
Labuschagne, who is also looking to force his way back into the Test side, joined Renshaw after Khawaja's dismissal and carried on the momentum. He took some time to settle but eventually found rhythm, hitting six fours and a six in an 80-ball unbeaten 54. His unbroken 111-run stand with Renshaw put Queensland in complete control by stumps.
Both batters appeared untroubled late in the day as Tasmania's bowling attack, lacking in genuine pace, struggled to extract much from a flat Brisbane pitch under clear skies. The early challenge posed by Jackson Bird with the new ball soon faded, allowing Queensland’s batters to dominate.
Neser Impresses with the Ball
Earlier in the day, Michael Neser underlined his all-round value with another impressive bowling display, finishing with 4 for 75. He cleaned up two of the last four wickets as Tasmania added just 80 to their overnight score. His highlight was a spectacular return catch to dismiss Kieran Elliott — a diving effort after changing direction off his follow-through. He also removed Nikhil Chaudhary caught behind.
Mitchell Swepson chipped in with the key wicket of Doran, who made a valuable 66 before being bowled. Jackson Bird contributed a quick 25 at the end, including four boundaries.
Match Situation
Tasmania: 379 (Silk 104, Hope 76, Weatherald 67, Doran 66; Neser 4-75)
Queensland: 248 for 1 (Renshaw 114*, Khawaja 69, Labuschagne 54*)
Queensland trail by 131 runs with nine wickets in hand.
With a solid foundation laid and the pitch continuing to play true, Queensland will look to push for a substantial first-innings lead on day three — a move that could put them in the driver’s seat and significantly bolster several Ashes hopefuls' credentials.
