Goud Times Roll: Rising Star Kranti Goud Shines Again as India Crush Pakistan in World Cup Clash
India's newest pace sensation Kranti Goud continued her rapid ascent on the international stage with a match-winning performance in India's 88-run win over Pakistan in the 2025 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. The 22-year-old seamer returned impressive figures of 3 for 30, rattling Pakistan's top order and firmly cementing her place as a key figure in India’s bowling attack.
Just a few months ago, Goud was a relative unknown, handed her debut in May during a tri-series in Colombo while senior pacers Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar were sidelined due to injury. Although her debut (5-0-22-0) went largely unnoticed, her ability to trouble top batters — including hitting Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu on the ribs — caught the eye of selectors.
She was soon on the plane to England, where a stunning six-wicket haul in Durham during the ODI series confirmed her potential. With that performance, Goud virtually secured her World Cup spot, regardless of the availability of senior bowlers.
In India’s World Cup opener against Sri Lanka, Goud picked up a steady 1 for 41. But it was her fiery spell against Pakistan in Colombo that truly marked her arrival. Bowling with pace, discipline, and swing, Goud removed Sadaf Shamas, Sidra Nawaz, and Aliya Riyaz, breaking the back of Pakistan’s chase.
Back in her hometown of Ghuwara, Madhya Pradesh, locals gathered around a giant LED screen to watch their star perform on the global stage.
“The talk is about focusing on line and length only,” Goud said after being named Player of the Match. “Variations like bouncers or slower balls depend on the situation. The coaches told me to pull my length back a little based on the surface, and that’s what I did.”
One of the standout moments came in her sixth over, when with the ball starting to lose shine, captain Harmanpreet Kaur considered removing the slip fielder. Goud, however, insisted otherwise.
“I told her, ‘No didi, let’s keep the slip for this over.’ I had a feeling I’d get a wicket,” Goud recalled with a smile. On the very next ball, she had Aliya Riyaz edging behind to Deepti Sharma at second slip. The moment captured Goud’s growing confidence and trust within the team setup.
Her impact wasn’t limited to the ball. Walking in at No. 10 with India struggling at 226 for 8, Goud contributed 8 runs off 4 balls, including two boundaries — a classy cover drive off Sadia Iqbal and a clever paddle past short fine leg off Diana Baig. Her 21-run ninth-wicket stand with Richa Ghosh helped push India’s total to 247, which ultimately proved more than enough.
“Richa told me, ‘If there’s a ball to hit, go for it. Otherwise, just give me the strike,’” Goud said. “The first ball was hittable, so I went for it. She told me to keep playing like that.”
Though the India-Pakistan rivalry is often intense, this World Cup encounter was played in a relatively calm atmosphere — albeit without the usual post-match handshake. Goud, however, remained unfazed by the occasion.
“I wasn’t thinking about India vs Pakistan or anything else,” she said. “My duty is to bowl, and I was focused on doing just that.”
With back-to-back standout performances and an attitude rooted in simplicity and focus, Goud is quickly becoming one of India’s most exciting new prospects. While sterner tests await — including clashes against South Africa and Australia in Visakhapatnam — she’s already proving to be a pivotal part of India's World Cup campaign.
