Labuschagne’s Commanding 160 Rekindles Ashes Hopes in Shield Showdown
Marnus Labuschagne has made a powerful statement in his quest for a Test recall, crafting a fluent 160 for Queensland in their dominant Sheffield Shield clash against Tasmania at Allan Border Field. His innings, described as “stripped back” and focused purely on scoring runs, has reignited his hopes of returning to the Australian side ahead of the Ashes opener next month.
Labuschagne, who was dropped after Australia’s World Test Championship final loss to South Africa in June and subsequently left out of the West Indies series, showed signs of a confident resurgence. His century marked a successful return to form and added further weight to his selection case with national selector George Bailey watching from the stands.
“It’s always nice to score a hundred and to get the team in a position where we can win the game,” Labuschagne said post-match. “I feel like I’ve really stripped it back and my focus is just scoring runs... not trying to play the perfect way, but just finding a way to score.”
Labuschagne credited teammate and long-time mentor Steve Smith for helping reshape his mental approach after being dropped from the Test side.
“I’ve played with one of the best players in the world and learned a lot from him,” he said. “Having a technique that’s adjustable is key. It’s about using what works rather than chasing perfection.”
The 31-year-old took 12 balls to get off the mark but quickly found rhythm, hitting 17 boundaries and two sixes in his 206-ball innings. Though he had a few nervy moments—being dropped on 61 and nearly throwing away his century on 98—Labuschagne brought up his 33rd first-class hundred with an all-run four.
His innings helped Queensland post a massive first-innings total of 612. Matt Renshaw (128) and Usman Khawaja (69) also contributed heavily, bolstering the Bulls’ dominance.
In response, Tasmania closed day three at 62 for 1 in their second innings, still trailing by 171 runs. Legspinner Nikhil Chaudhary was the pick of the Tasmanian bowlers on debut, claiming an impressive 5 for 108.
Labuschagne’s resurgence comes at a crucial time as Australia looks to finalise its top order for the Ashes series beginning on November 21 in Perth. His Shield rival and incumbent Test opener Sam Konstas failed again for New South Wales against Western Australia, adding more weight to Labuschagne’s selection credentials.
Having also scored a domestic one-day century last month, Labuschagne’s timing couldn’t be better as selectors prepare to name their squad for the highly anticipated Ashes campaign.
With performances like this, the message is clear: Marnus Labuschagne isn’t done with Test cricket just yet.
