Hatcher, Hadley Lead NSW to Thrilling Shield Win Over WA
New South Wales kicked off their Sheffield Shield campaign with a gritty and hard-fought 74-run victory over reigning champions Western Australia at the WACA Ground in Perth.
A spirited bowling performance, led by Liam Hatcher and Ryan Hadley, saw NSW defend a modest target of 231 on a challenging surface. WA were bowled out for 156 on the final day, despite a late resistance from Ashton Agar and an injured Joel Paris, whose last-wicket stand briefly threatened to turn the tide.
Hatcher, Hadley Break WA Resistance
Hatcher claimed 4 for 49 in the fourth innings, tearing through the lower order after Hadley had already removed key top-order batters. Hadley finished with 3 for 30 in the second innings, taking his match tally to 8 wickets, including a first-innings haul of 5 for 38.
The match was sealed when Agar, batting with Paris, chopped on to his stumps off Hadley for 46 just after the second drinks break on day four. The pair had added a defiant 53-run stand for the final wicket, the highest of the innings, causing some nervous moments for the visitors before the final breakthrough.
New Faces Step Up for Rebuilding NSW
With experienced campaigners Jackson Bird returning to Tasmania and Moises Henriques retiring from four-day cricket, NSW fielded a relatively fresh side. The win is a significant morale boost under the leadership of veteran spinner Nathan Lyon, who captained the side in the absence of Jack Edwards (on Australia A duty).
NSW’s batting effort was led by Jack Salzmann, who top-scored in both innings with 43 and 72. Lance Morris (out injured) and Joel Paris were missed in WA’s bowling unit, with Matt Kelly stepping up to take 5 for 43 in the second innings.
WA Batting Falters Again
Western Australia's batting proved brittle throughout the match. Set 231 to win on the final day, they collapsed under pressure despite playing on their home ground. Cameron Bancroft failed again in his bid for a Test recall, scoring just 10 and 3, while Test allrounder Cameron Green made 19 and 24 in his two innings before falling to a sharp caught-and-bowled effort by NSW quick Charlie Stobo.
Green, still recovering from back surgery, bowled just four overs in the match.
Test Hopefuls Fail to Impress
NSW's Test hopefuls Sam Konstas and Kurtis Patterson missed key opportunities to impress national selectors. Konstas, Australia's incumbent Test opener, managed just 4 and 14. Patterson, who played his last Test in 2019, could only score 8 and 4.
Despite those setbacks, the win gives NSW a solid platform early in the Shield season and signals the depth in their pace attack following the departures of several senior players.
