Debutant Chaudhary Guides Tasmania to Draw Against Queensland in High-Scoring Shield Clash

Debutant Nikhil Chaudhary played a starring role with both bat and ball to help Tasmania salvage a draw against Queensland in a high-scoring Sheffield Shield encounter at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Trailing by a massive 233 runs after the first innings, Tasmania were under pressure heading into the final day but fought their way to safety, finishing at 317 for 7 in their second innings before the match was called off with about 45 minutes left in the day.

Chaudhary's Dream Debut

After claiming 5 for 108 in Queensland’s imposing first-innings total of 612, Chaudhary capped a remarkable first-class debut with an unbeaten 76 off just 80 balls at No. 8. His counterattacking innings took Tasmania out of danger just as Queensland sensed a late opening.

His mature approach under pressure ensured that the visitors, once struggling at six down and still behind on runs, avoided collapse and secured a valuable draw.

Weatherald Impresses Again

Jake Weatherald, pushing for a Test opening spot ahead of the Ashes, followed up his first-innings 67 with another composed knock of 57. His twin fifties come at an important time as selectors weigh options to partner Usman Khawaja for the summer Test series.

Caleb Jewell also provided resistance with a gritty 67 off 147 balls before falling to the ever-reliable Michael Neser, who was Queensland's best bowler with 3 for 69 in the second innings, to go with his 4 for 75 in the first.

Queensland briefly sniffed a chance when Usman Khawaja took a sharp catch at slip to dismiss Bradley Hope, but Chaudhary’s late flourish shut the door on any hopes of a dramatic finish.

Queensland Batters Dominate Early

The match will be remembered for Queensland’s run glut in the first innings. Matt Renshaw (128) and Marnus Labuschagne (160) put on a masterclass with the bat, making strong cases for national selection.

Labuschagne, recently dropped from the Test side, took 12 balls to get off the mark but grew in confidence as his innings progressed in front of national selector George Bailey. Renshaw, meanwhile, continued his strong start to the summer and has since been confirmed for an ODI recall.

Captain Usman Khawaja (69) and Max Clayton (59) also chipped in as Queensland piled on 612 in ideal batting conditions.

Final Score Summary:

Queensland – 612 (Labuschagne 160, Renshaw 128, Khawaja 69, Clayton 59, Chaudhary 5-108)
Tasmania – 379 (Silk 104, Hope 76, Weatherald 67, Doran 66, Neser 4-75) & 317/7 (Chaudhary 76*, Jewell 67, Weatherald 57, Neser 3-69)
