Controversial Reprieve Helps Knight Guide England to Victory Over Bangladesh

A contentious third-umpire decision reprieving Heather Knight became the major talking point after England edged Bangladesh by four wickets in a tense Women’s World Cup 2025 clash in Guwahati.

Chasing 179, England found themselves in early trouble before Knight’s unbeaten 79 off 111 balls steered them home with 23 balls to spare. However, it was a moment in the 15th over of the chase that sparked debate.

Facing Bangladesh legspinner Fahima Khatun, Knight chipped a delivery towards cover where Shorna Akter dived forward and appeared to take a low catch. Knight began walking off, believing she was out. But the on-field umpires sent the decision upstairs, where third umpire Gayathri Venugopalan ruled that the catch had not been cleanly taken, declaring Knight not out. At the time, Knight was on 13.

At first look, I thought it was out,” Knight admitted after the match. “I thought it carried and it was a fair catch, so I walked off. But the TV umpire decided otherwise. I certainly had a bit of luck today, but probably with the year I’ve had, I deserved a little bit. I tried to ride it and really make it count.

Knight, returning from a hamstring injury, survived not one but three close calls during her innings. On the very first ball she faced, she was adjudged caught behind, only for a review to show the ball had missed the bat and brushed the pad well outside the off stump. Later, in the seventh over, she was given out lbw, but once again overturned the decision via DRS, with ball-tracking showing the delivery would have bounced over the stumps.

It was the first time I was out three times in an innings and had them overturned, that’s for sure,” she said. “It was a case of refocusing. It was swinging quite a lot, which makes it tricky for the umpires. But that’s the joy of DRS.

Bangladesh, however, were left frustrated — particularly with the controversial catch decision. Fahima Khatun, who had an outstanding day with figures of 3 for 16 from her 10 overs, voiced her disappointment.

It was a disappointing decision for us,” Fahima said. “Every player in our team felt it was a clear dismissal. The decision was overturned after being given out, which was disappointing. We all know how crucial that wicket was. Had the call gone our way, there was every chance the outcome of the match could have been different.

The incident reignited conversations around the interpretation of low catches and the consistency of third-umpire decisions, especially in close World Cup matches where margins are slim.

Despite the controversy, Knight’s innings proved decisive, as England managed to recover from a shaky start and register a vital win in their World Cup campaign.
