IPL 2026 Auction Likely Around December 15; Retention Deadline Set for November 15

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 player auction is likely to be held between December 13 and 15, with the retention deadline officially set for November 15, according to franchise sources in communication with the BCCI. While the IPL Governing Council has yet to confirm the final auction date, franchise officials have indicated that mid-December is being strongly considered as the auction window.

Unlike the previous two editions held overseas — in Dubai (2023) and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (2024) — the upcoming auction is expected to take place in India, though the BCCI is yet to make a formal announcement on the venue.

Retention and Releases

All ten franchises must submit their final retention lists by November 15, outlining the players they wish to retain and those they plan to release ahead of the mini-auction. While a major shake-up is not expected across the board, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR)—who finished at the bottom of the IPL 2025 standings—are reportedly considering notable changes.

CSK, the five-time champions, are believed to be releasing multiple players, including Devon Conway, Sam Curran, and potentially Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Vijay Shankar. With Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement, the franchise has received an additional INR 9.75 crore in their purse ahead of the auction.

At Rajasthan Royals, the spotlight is on captain Sanju Samson, with reports suggesting a possible trade involving the skipper. The futures of Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana also remain uncertain. However, the expected return of Kumar Sangakkara as head coach could influence retention decisions.

Players on the Move?

Several high-profile players could be up for grabs, with names like T Natarajan, Mitchell Starc, Akash Deep, Mayank Yadav, David Miller, and Venkatesh Iyer—the latter bought for a staggering INR 23.75 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders in the last auction—potentially heading to new franchises.

Meanwhile, Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is expected to be one of the most sought-after players this auction. Having missed the previous auction due to injury, Green has already garnered interest from multiple franchises and is set to spark a bidding war.

As the retention deadline approaches, all eyes will be on how franchises reshape their squads in pursuit of IPL 2026 glory.
