Sai Sudharsan Sidelined on Day 3 After Helmet Blow Despite Stunning Catch
India’s rising star B Sai Sudharsan will not take the field on Day 3 of the second Test against the West Indies after suffering an "impact injury" during play on the second day. The incident occurred in a dramatic moment at forward short-leg, where Sudharsan took a remarkable catch off John Campbell, but not without a personal cost.
The injury happened when West Indies opener Campbell attempted a powerful slog-sweep off Ravindra Jadeja in the eighth over of the innings. The ball struck Sudharsan flush on the helmet grille before ricocheting and lodging into the crook of his arms. Despite the blow, he held on to complete the catch, displaying tremendous grit and reflexes.
Following the incident, Sudharsan left the field and did not return for the remainder of the 35 overs bowled on Day 2. The BCCI issued a statement on Sunday morning, confirming that the injury is “not serious” and that the player “is doing fine.” However, he continues to be monitored by the medical team, and his availability to bat in India’s second innings remains uncertain.
Before the injury, Sudharsan had made a significant contribution with the bat, scoring 87 runs off 165 balls, including 12 boundaries. He shared a 193-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal for the second wicket, laying a strong foundation for India’s imposing total of 518 for 5 declared. Jaiswal’s 175 and Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 129 further cemented India’s dominant position in the match as they aim to seal the series 2-0.
As the West Indies continue their reply, India will be hoping Sudharsan makes a swift recovery ahead of what promises to be a decisive phase in the Test match.
