West Indies Take Delhi Test to Final Day; India Need 58 for Series Sweep
India were made to work hard on Day 4 of the second Test in Delhi as West Indies displayed admirable grit and determination to drag the contest into the final day. Despite centuries from John Campbell and Shai Hope, and a dogged final-wicket stand, India remain firm favourites, needing just 58 runs on Day 5 to secure a 2-0 series win.
Gritty West Indies Fightback
West Indies began the day with two set batters at the crease and showed clear intent to extend the contest. John Campbell brought up his maiden Test century with a towering six off Ravindra Jadeja, after spending a nervy spell in the 90s. His resistance ended on 107 after he was trapped LBW by Jadeja attempting a reverse sweep.
Shai Hope, meanwhile, showed immense patience and finally ended a 58-innings wait for a Test century. His 103 was a mix of resilience and strokeplay, offering solidity to the West Indies middle order. Alongside Roston Chase, who contributed 40, Hope steered the visitors past the follow-on mark and into a position of temporary parity.
But India's bowlers remained relentless. Kuldeep Yadav continued his excellent run, following up his first-innings five-for with three wickets in the second. Jasprit Bumrah also chipped in with three scalps, including a searing inducker to bowl Jomel Warrican and a feather edge from Anderson Phillip.
Last-Wicket Resistance
Just when it looked like West Indies would fold quickly, the final-wicket pair of Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales frustrated the hosts with a spirited 79-run partnership that spanned 22 overs. Greaves reached his fifty with calm assurance, while Seales added 32 valuable runs before holing out to deep square leg. By the time the innings ended at 390, India had sent down 118.5 overs — their most in an innings since the 2023 Ahmedabad Test against Australia.
India Begin Modest Chase
Set a modest target of 121, India made a cautious start in the final session. Yashasvi Jaiswal, however, departed early, trying to accelerate with an ambitious shot over long-on. But KL Rahul and debutant Sai Sudharsan steadied the innings with a composed, unbeaten partnership, guiding India to 63/1 at stumps.
They will resume on the final morning needing just 58 more runs to seal the match and complete a 2-0 clean sweep.
Brief Scores:
India 518/5 decl. (Yashasvi Jaiswal 175, Shubman Gill 129*, Sai Sudharsan 87; Jomel Warrican 3-98)
West Indies 248 & 390 (f/o) (John Campbell 113, Shai Hope 103, Justin Greaves 50; Jasprit Bumrah 3-44, Kuldeep Yadav 3-104)
India 63/1 in 17 overs (KL Rahul 33*, Sai Sudharsan 27*) need 58 more runs to win
India are well-positioned for a final-day finish, but West Indies’ fighting spirit on Day 4 ensured the contest stretched further than expected.
