Mayank Agarwal’s County Stint Sets the Tone for Upcoming Ranji Trophy Campaign

Mayank Agarwal is no stranger to unexpected opportunities, and his recent stint with Yorkshire has proved to be the perfect prelude to the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season. The Karnataka skipper, who is set to lead his side in their opener against Saurashtra on Wednesday, says the brief yet impactful county experience has boosted his confidence and sharpened his game.

“I’d been trying for a county stint for three or four years,” Agarwal shared ahead of the Ranji season. “A couple of years ago, Surrey had called, but the Duleep Trophy came in the way. This time it was sudden, but I didn’t think twice. I’m glad I went. It was a lot of fun, and a very valuable experience.”

Called up by Yorkshire at the end of August, Agarwal flew to England almost immediately and featured in five innings, scoring 201 runs. His standout performance came in his final appearance — a match-winning 175 against Durham — helping Yorkshire secure safety in Division One of the County Championship. It was a strong comeback after two ducks in his first three innings.

“Getting runs in England felt great; it gave me a lot of confidence,” Agarwal said. “As an opening batter in England, it’s not the easiest place to play. When I got in, I made it big. That’s what mattered.”

A Career Built on Sudden Opportunities

Agarwal’s journey in cricket has often been shaped by unexpected calls — starting from his Test debut in 2018 when he replaced the injured Prithvi Shaw and scored 76 at the MCG, to a more recent stint in the 2025 IPL. While in Oman earlier this year, he was contacted by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to fill in for an injured Devdutt Padikkal.

Agarwal responded with two crucial knocks in a title-winning campaign for RCB, including an unbeaten 41 off 23 balls during a high-pressure chase against Lucknow Super Giants that secured a top-two finish.

“Playing for RCB again and being part of a title-winning team was incredible,” said Agarwal, who debuted in the IPL with the franchise back in 2011. “I’m proud I could contribute, played some good innings, and had crucial partnerships, including one with Jitesh [Sharma]. I believe I made a solid impact.”

Karnataka Eyeing Elusive Ninth Ranji Title

Heading into his third season as Karnataka captain, Agarwal is optimistic about the team’s prospects. Despite not winning the Ranji Trophy since 2014-15, Karnataka remain consistent contenders. This season, they’ve had a strong build-up with a solid run in the Thimmappiah Trophy and productive pre-season camps.

“We’ve prepared well. For us, it’s about putting in the hard yards early, gaining momentum, and running with it. We definitely have what it takes to go all the way,” Agarwal said.

Karnataka’s squad has seen some changes — opener R Samarth has moved to Vidarbha and pacer V Koushik has joined Goa. However, the return of Karun Nair from Vidarbha and the emergence of young talent like R Smaran have added strength to the side.

“We have a great bunch of guys, talented players, some knocking on the doors of Indian cricket,” Agarwal said. “Many have put in consistent performances and are more confident now.”

Always Ready, Always Prepared

Agarwal’s ability to step up under pressure and adapt quickly to new roles has been a hallmark of his career. Whether it’s a sudden call from the national team, a last-minute IPL stint, or a county cricket opportunity, he has consistently delivered.

“That’s how it’s been for me in this sport — getting a sudden call, having to perform right away,” he reflected. “I’m proud that I’ve always been ready and made an impact whenever those chances have come.”

As Karnataka aim for their ninth Ranji Trophy title, their captain’s readiness, resilience, and recent form could be the X-factor they’ve been missing in recent years.
