Konstas' Ashes Hopes Dwindle Amid 13-Wicket Day at Junction Oval
Sam Konstas' hopes of donning the Baggy Green this summer have taken a significant blow after he was dismissed for a fourth-ball duck by Scott Boland on a dramatic opening day of the Sheffield Shield clash between Victoria and New South Wales at the Junction Oval. In a bowler-dominated day, 13 wickets fell for just 279 runs on a pitch offering plenty for the seamers.
New South Wales ended the day on 39 for 3 in response to Victoria’s 240, still trailing by 201 runs. Boland and Fergus O’Neill made the most of the seamer-friendly evening conditions, snaring three quick wickets, including the scalp of Konstas, who was trapped lbw by Boland after shouldering arms to a full, straight delivery that would have cannoned into middle and leg.
It was the fifth time Boland has dismissed Konstas in Shield cricket—and the third time in his last three innings against the Victorian quick—intensifying doubts around the young right-hander’s Ashes credentials. After scores of 4, 14, and 0 to start the Shield season, Konstas has just a few innings left to make a case for Test selection before the squad is named.
“Scotty just keeps getting better,” Victoria captain Peter Handscomb said after play. “He peaks at the right time every summer. I’ve got no doubt he’ll be ready if selected for the Ashes.”
Earlier in the day, Victoria’s own top order crumbled in similarly testing conditions. Reduced to 66 for 5, it was a 130-run rescue stand between Handscomb (85) and Mitchell Perry (66) that lifted the hosts to a competitive total. Both batters applied themselves with patience and precision, playing the ball late and capitalising on the rare scoring opportunities.
Liam Hatcher claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, finishing with 5 for 88, while Jack Edwards supported with 3 for 44 as NSW capitalised early after electing to bowl first on a lively surface with a thick green covering.
The day also saw a historic first in Australian domestic cricket. Sean Abbott became the first player to be subbed out of a Sheffield Shield match under Cricket Australia’s new injury replacement rule. Abbott suffered a split webbing on his bowling hand after trying to stop a straight drive from Handscomb, forcing him from the field. He was officially replaced by Charlie Stobo, who made an immediate impact post-tea, dismissing Handscomb with a delivery that shaped away late and found the edge.
With Abbott off the field, Victoria capitalised, but Hatcher cleaned up the tail late in the innings, including the crucial wicket of Perry after a sharp catch from Edwards at slip. Todd Murphy added some vital late runs with a quickfire 31 off 25 balls before falling to a short ball.
In reply, NSW's top order fared no better. After Boland removed Konstas, O'Neill struck twice—first removing Kurtis Patterson for 5 and then disturbing Blake Nikitaras’ stumps with a superb delivery from around the wicket. NSW limped to stumps at 39 for 3, with Matthew Gilkes and nightwatchman Ryan Hadley tasked with steadying the innings on day two.
With seam movement expected to continue, day two promises further examination for both batting units—and perhaps one final opportunity for Konstas to revive his Ashes dream.
