Haskett Shines as Tasmania Collapse After Weatherald Misses Ashes Chance
A dominant display by the bowlers overshadowed the batters on a lively first day at Blundstone Arena, as 14 wickets fell in the Sheffield Shield clash between Tasmania and Western Australia. Western Australia finished the day slightly ahead at 107 for 4, trailing Tasmania's first innings total of 171 by just 64 runs.
Liam Haskett, playing just his second full Shield season, emerged as the surprise package for Western Australia. The tall left-arm seamer ripped through Tasmania’s top and middle order with an impressive spell of 3 for 26 from 10 overs, turning the tide after a steady start by the hosts.
Ashes hopeful Jake Weatherald missed a golden opportunity to push his Test case, falling cheaply in the opening session. His dismissal added pressure to a Tasmania side that soon crumbled when Haskett was brought on as third-change.
The 22-year-old struck quickly, removing Tim Ward with a sharp delivery that found the edge. He then clean bowled Caleb Jewell and Nivethan Radhakrishnan in quick succession to leave Tasmania reeling.
Australia white-ball allrounder Aaron Hardie also chipped in with a crucial 3 for 45, while Matt Kelly claimed 3 for 51 as Tasmania lost 7 wickets for just 61 runs during a middle-order collapse.
Jake Doran provided the only real resistance with an unbeaten 41, including three sixes, helping Tasmania limp to 171 after being in a far stronger position earlier in the day.
Western Australia’s reply began positively, but they too faltered late in the evening session. After early contributions from Jayden Goodwin and Hilton Cartwright, both batters fell in quick succession, missing the chance to give WA a dominant lead.
Veteran seamer Jackson Bird struck early, removing Cameron Bancroft for 3 with a classic outswinger caught at slip. Riley Meredith bowled with good pace and bounce, troubling the WA batters and keeping Tasmania in the contest heading into day two.
