Neser and Swepson Lead Queensland Fightback After South Australia Collapse
Queensland's bowling attack, led by Michael Neser and Mitchell Swepson, turned the tide on day one at Adelaide Oval as South Australia collapsed from a strong position to be bowled out for 228 in their Sheffield Shield clash.
At stumps, Queensland were 26 without loss in reply, with Usman Khawaja steady on 22, trailing by 202 runs.
South Australia had looked comfortable at 133 for 2 midway through the day, with Conor McInerney (60) and Jason Sangha (51) putting together a promising partnership. However, legspinner Mitchell Swepson triggered a dramatic collapse, taking 4 for 50 as the home side lost 5 wickets for 55 runs.
Swepson’s spell was highlighted by the dismissal of McInerney, trapped lbw after a patient innings. He then removed Sangha via a sharp low catch from Khawaja at slip, before dismissing Jake Lehmann and Nathan McAndrew with smart variations in flight and turn.
While Swepson did the damage in the middle, it was Neser who cleaned up the tail, continuing his impressive start to the season. He finished with 4 for 30, following on from his 4 for 75 in the opening round. The veteran seamer was lethal in the final session, knocking over Wes Agar with a well-directed short ball, and removing Liam Scott (44) and Jordan Buckingham to wrap up the innings.
Neser, often overlooked in the national setup, is once again pushing his case ahead of the Ashes, especially with doubts around the fitness of Pat Cummins and the recent injury to fellow contender Sean Abbott.
"He's just relentless," a Queensland teammate said of Neser. "When there's movement on offer, he's always in the game."
Queensland's openers negotiated a tricky 10-over session late in the day with minimal fuss, positioning the visitors well heading into day two.
