Kane Williamson Joins Lucknow Super Giants as Strategic Advisor Ahead of IPL 2026
Kane Williamson has been appointed as a strategic advisor to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking his first official role as part of a franchise’s support staff.
The announcement was made by LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka via social media on Thursday morning. “His leadership, strategic insight, deep understanding of the game, and ability to inspire players make him an invaluable addition to the team,” Goenka said of the 35-year-old New Zealand star.
Williamson, one of the most respected figures in world cricket, has previously been associated with the Super Giants setup through their Durban franchise in the SA20. While he has not officially retired from international cricket, Williamson has taken a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket, meaning his future appearances are expected to be infrequent.
His most recent appearance for New Zealand came in the Champions Trophy final against India in March 2025. He is set to miss the upcoming T20I series against England, but is targeting a return for the ODI leg of the tour, beginning October 26 in his hometown of Tauranga.
Transition from Player to Mentor
Despite being a seasoned IPL player, Williamson has seen limited action in recent seasons. He suffered a knee injury in the opening match of IPL 2023 while playing for Gujarat Titans and was ruled out for the rest of the tournament. In 2024, still with the Titans, he featured in just two games, scoring 27 runs. He remained unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
In the interim, Williamson took part in The Hundred in England, representing London Spirit. He had a steady campaign, scoring 204 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 129.93, although his team finished seventh out of eight.
A New Chapter with LSG
This new advisory role with LSG marks Williamson’s first official venture into franchise cricket support staff, but he brings with him a wealth of experience. As captain, he led New Zealand to the 2019 ODI World Cup final, and more memorably, to victory in the inaugural World Test Championship in 2021.
LSG, under the leadership of Rishabh Pant and coached by Justin Langer, will be hoping Williamson’s appointment brings fresh direction after finishing seventh in both IPL 2024 and 2025. The franchise had previously made a strong impression in its early years, finishing third in IPL 2022 and 2023.
With Williamson now in a strategic role, LSG will be looking to regain their footing and contend strongly in IPL 2026.
