Boland's Fiery Five-For Seals Thrilling Win for Victoria Over New South Wales
Scott Boland delivered a match-winning spell as Victoria secured a dramatic 38-run win over New South Wales in a tense Sheffield Shield clash at Junction Oval, finishing the game inside three days.
Boland’s 5 for 67, including the final five wickets of the fourth innings, broke New South Wales’ resolve after they appeared in control at 184 for 5, needing just 71 more to chase down a target of 255. His effort was complemented by a crucial 3 for 17 from off-spinner Todd Murphy, who helped turn the tide earlier in the innings.
Despite a spirited 64 from Oliver Davies and a rollicking 53 from young opener Sam Konstas, New South Wales fell short, undone by a devastating lower-order collapse. Boland’s standout moment came when he dismissed Davies with a delivery that jagged back sharply through the gate, knocking off the leg bail and drawing a rare, fired-up stare from the usually composed pacer.
Murphy had earlier broken a promising 90-run opening partnership between Konstas and Blake Nikitaras, removing both batters and Kurtis Patterson in a game-changing spell. Konstas, showing glimpses of his potential, entertained with aggressive strokeplay, including a reverse ramp for six off Boland. But his innings ended when he chopped a Murphy delivery onto his stumps, marking the second time the spinner has dismissed him in Shield cricket.
New South Wales coach Greg Shipperd reflected on the missed opportunity. “That was a terrific partnership, a bit of punch, a bit of counter punch… but both got out in a disappointing fashion,” he said. “That opened the door, and the door was then slammed shut on us.”
The match was not without controversy. NSW were left fuming over two contentious dismissals. Matthew Gilkes was given out stumped in a tight call with no third umpire available, while No.11 Ryan Hadley appeared visibly frustrated after being adjudged caught off a potential inside edge.
Earlier, NSW had bowled themselves into a winning position by restricting Victoria to 177 in their second innings. Liam Hatcher (3 for 29) and Hadley (3 for 53) led the charge under gloomy conditions, before Edwards and Lyon cleaned up the tail. Fergus O’Neill (25) and Mitchell Perry added valuable lower-order runs for Victoria, with O’Neill’s aggressive cameo ending in a stumping after being deceived by Lyon’s flight.
Murphy was the last man out for Victoria, dismissed lbw while attempting a reverse sweep.
Victoria’s first innings total of 240, built on steady contributions, had given them a slim edge, which their bowlers capitalised on. NSW managed 163 in reply, before the match spiralled into a gripping fourth innings contest.
With this win, Victoria rise to the top of the Sheffield Shield table with two wins from as many matches.
