Sri Lanka Opt to Bat First Against South Africa in Crucial World Cup Clash

Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and chose to bat first in their Women’s World Cup group-stage encounter against a high-flying South Africa side in Colombo, hoping to capitalise on their batting form and post a strong total on a dry and mostly sunny day.

The home team, unchanged from their previous match, are seeking their first win of the tournament after rain washed out both their previous games. Despite not registering a victory yet, Sri Lanka carry two points from those no-results and will be keen to put points on the board through performance today.

South Africa, meanwhile, made three changes to their XI. Eighteen-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Karabo Meso was handed her World Cup debut, replacing Sinalo Jafta. Allrounder Sune Luus returned from a hip flexor strain that kept her out of the Bangladesh match, while offspinner Nondumiso Shangase was brought in to target Sri Lanka’s left-hand batters. Anneke Bosch and Tumi Sekhukhune were the players to make way in what were described as tactical moves.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt, who was happy to field first, noted the potential influence of evening dew and the moisture under the surface due to recent rain and a covered pitch.

With two wins from three games and sitting in third place on the points table, South Africa are within touching distance of a semi-final berth. A victory today would all but secure their progression to the knockout stages.

Athapaththu said the decision to bat was inspired by Sri Lanka’s strong batting display in their last outing, where they scored 258 for 6 against New Zealand before rain ended the match. “We want to back our batters to do the job again,” she added.
