Rohit, Kohli Guide New-Look India as Shubman Gill Begins ODI Captaincy Era

As India gears up for a three-match ODI series against Australia, all eyes are not just on the matches themselves, but on the shifting dynamics within the team. At the center of this transformation is Shubman Gill, the newly appointed ODI captain, flanked by stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in what is likely their final tour of Australia.

The symbolism was clear during India's training session at Optus Stadium. In adjacent nets, Rohit and Kohli—India’s former captains and long-time pillars—went through their paces, while Gill, poised for his ODI captaincy debut, began his preparations. This image captured a moment of passing the baton, signaling the beginning of a new era for Indian cricket.

Gill, 26, has already made a strong impression in his leadership journey. After a stellar start to his Test captaincy earlier this year—where he topped the run charts in the England series with 754 runs at an average of 75.40—he now looks to leave his mark on the ODI setup.

However, the presence of Kohli and Rohit continues to command attention. Their every move during training was closely followed by fans and media alike in Perth. Despite no longer leading the side, they remain towering figures, both on and off the field.

Speaking to reporters, left-arm allrounder Axar Patel emphasized the importance of their experience during this transition phase.

“This is a great experience for Shubman too. Rohit bhai and Virat bhai are here—this is part of the transition process,” Axar said. “It will help in Shubman's growth as a captain. It's good if young and experienced play together.”

India’s camp has had a relaxed, confident air, with Kohli in particular showing a more jovial side, laughing and chatting with teammates after an intense net session—perhaps a reflection of reduced pressure in the twilight of his career.

But the upcoming matches hold significance for more than just Gill. With the 2027 World Cup on the horizon, these games represent one of the final chances for Rohit and Kohli to perform on Australian soil. According to Axar, both veterans have trained hard at the BCCI Centre of Excellence and are in good form.

“They look in good touch in training. And in terms of fitness, everyone’s passed their tests. I think they’re ready to go,” he added.

The series will also see players like Axar Patel take on more prominent roles. With Hardik Pandya sidelined due to injury and Ravindra Jadeja not selected, Axar is expected to bat at No.5 and lead India’s all-rounder duties.

“I am very confident about this series,” said Axar. “In the Asia Cup, I did well with bat and ball. I’m ready for the challenge.”

Having first toured Australia during the 2015 World Cup, Axar believes his journey has come full circle.

“I know what I have to do now. The team relies on me—‘it’s Axar, he can get us the results.’ That belief makes a difference.”

As India begins its transition under Gill’s leadership, supported by the experience of Kohli and Rohit, the upcoming ODIs against Australia mark more than just a series—they represent the blend of past glory and future promise.
