Zimbabwe Replaces Afghanistan in Pakistan Tri-Series After Tragic Cross-Border Incident
Zimbabwe has been confirmed as the replacement for Afghanistan in Pakistan's upcoming triangular T20I series, scheduled to take place from November 17 to 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore. Sri Lanka remains the third participant in the series.
The development follows a tragic incident in Afghanistan’s Paktika province, where three local cricketers were killed in what the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has described as a cross-border attack in the Urgun district. The victims were reportedly returning home after participating in a friendly match in the provincial capital, Sharana.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the ACB confirmed the deaths and expressed deep sorrow, calling it "a great loss for Afghanistan's sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family." The board added that, as a mark of respect for the victims, it had decided to withdraw from the tri-nation series.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also issued statements expressing condolences and solidarity with Afghanistan's cricketing community in the wake of the tragedy.
While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not issued a direct comment on the ACB’s allegations or the nature of the incident, it confirmed that the tri-series would proceed as planned. In its announcement, the PCB stated it had been formally notified of Afghanistan’s "inability" to participate and welcomed Zimbabwe as a replacement team.
The tri-series will kick off with Zimbabwe facing hosts Pakistan in Rawalpindi, followed by a fixture against Sri Lanka at the same venue. The remaining matches, including the final, will be held at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium.
This unexpected change adds a sombre tone to the series, which was originally intended to serve as preparation for upcoming international tournaments. The cricketing world now looks ahead to the competition while mourning a profound loss.
