Alyssa Healy Ruled Out of England Clash with Calf Strain, Tahlia McGrath to Captain Australia
Australia will be without captain Alyssa Healy for their upcoming ICC Women's ODI World Cup clash against England after she sustained a minor calf strain during a training session on Saturday. Cricket Australia confirmed the injury on Tuesday, just a day before the highly anticipated match.
In Healy’s absence, vice-captain Tahlia McGrath will step up to lead the side, while young batter Georgia Voll is expected to take Healy’s place at the top of the order alongside Phoebe Litchfield. Voll, who had an extended batting session in the nets on Monday, appears the frontrunner for a spot in the playing XI.
Despite the setback, Australia remains in a strong position. They were the first team to secure a spot in the semi-finals, having won four out of their five matches so far, and currently sit atop the points table. With qualification secured, team management is unlikely to risk further injury to Healy ahead of the knockout stages.
Healy’s absence is a blow given her recent red-hot form. After a quiet ODI series against India leading into the tournament, she has found top gear at the World Cup. Following modest starts against New Zealand (19) and Pakistan (20), she exploded with a blistering 142 off 107 balls against India, followed by an unbeaten 113 from 77 deliveries against Bangladesh.
Australia faces South Africa in their final group match on Saturday, and Healy will continue to be monitored with hopes of a return ahead of the semi-finals.
