Shreyas Iyer Returns to Upright Stance, Scores 61 in Adelaide ODI

Adelaide, October 23, 2025 — Shreyas Iyer began a new chapter in his international career with an old technique, rediscovering success through a more upright batting stance during India’s second ODI against Australia in Adelaide. On a pitch offering extra bounce, Iyer looked composed and confident, scoring 61 off 77 balls even as most Indian batters struggled.

Speaking after the match, Iyer revealed that reverting to his upright stance — a method he used earlier in his career — has helped him better handle pace and bounce. “Since last year, I wanted to have an upright stance for conditions where the bounce is a little bit more than expected,” Iyer said. “I worked with my coach and we developed this technique, which was actually my natural style growing up.”

Iyer has been testing this stance in domestic cricket, against Australia A, and now at the international level. He explained that his past struggles against short-pitched bowling and recurring back injuries prompted him to reassess his technique. “Even in Mumbai, when we play on red-soil wickets with extra bounce, an upright stance really helps,” he noted. “You’ve got to keep adapting based on the wicket.”

Since India’s Champions Trophy triumph in the UAE earlier this year, Iyer has featured in the IPL, two first-class matches, and captained India A in a one-day series against Australia A. However, he has opted to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket, citing physical challenges.

“When I played red-ball cricket after the IPL, I realised my intensity dropped during long fielding sessions,” he said. “In ODIs, you get rest between games, but not in Tests. That’s why I made the call to step back for a while.”

Iyer’s composed 61 in Adelaide, built on a foundation of technical adjustment and self-awareness, signals a promising resurgence as he looks to cement his place in India’s white-ball setup.
