Jack Edwards Earns Maiden Call-Up for Sydney ODI; Maxwell, Beardman, and Dwarshuis Boost T20I Squad

Australia have made a series of changes to their white-ball squads ahead of the final ODI and upcoming T20I series against India, with several new inclusions and returns from injury.

New South Wales allrounder Jack Edwards has received his first international call-up, joining the ODI squad for the final match in Sydney. The 25-year-old’s selection comes on the back of strong performances for Australia A on their recent tour of India, where he impressed with both bat and ball — scoring 88 in a four-day match and following it up with 4 for 56 and 89 off 75 in the 50-over fixtures in Kanpur.

Edwards’ inclusion gives Australia the option to trial a deeper batting line-up featuring multiple allrounders in what is a dead rubber at the SCG. The move may also allow selectors to rest senior quicks Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, with just one rest day separating the second and third ODIs.

Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne has been released from the ODI squad to prepare for Queensland’s Sheffield Shield clash against NSW at the Gabba starting Tuesday. Spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who played in the opening ODI in Perth, returns to the squad for the Sydney fixture after being left out for the second game.

On the T20I front, several notable updates have been confirmed. Glenn Maxwell and Ben Dwarshuis are both fit to return for the latter stages of the five-match series, while Western Australia’s young pacer Mahli Beardman has earned a surprise call-up for the final three games.

Beardman, 20, was part of Australia’s 2024 white-ball tour of England as an injury replacement but has since impressed for Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers. After recovering from stress fractures over the winter, he has taken 12 wickets at 17.75 with an economy rate of 5.75 in his first four List A matches this season.

Dwarshuis, sidelined with a calf injury during the ODI series and the early T20Is, will return for the fourth and fifth matches in Queensland. Maxwell, recovering from a wrist fracture sustained in New Zealand, will be available for the last three T20Is.

Both Hazlewood and Sean Abbott will miss the latter stages of the T20I series to play Sheffield Shield cricket for New South Wales. Hazlewood will feature in only the first two matches, while Abbott, returning from a hand injury, will depart after the third game in Hobart.

Additionally, Josh Philippe has been added to the T20I squad as wicketkeeping cover, with Josh Inglis still recovering from a calf strain.
